I am trying to change my mac mail password because phony email is being sent from my account. I have followed instructions I have found several places that tell me to go to preferences, go to accounts, choose account, highlight old password, replace with new password, and save. But I never get the save prompt, and the save function is not available in the menu. I don't know what to try.
There are two steps you need to do. In order to change your password, you need to change it at your mail service server as well as on your iMac. So, for example, if your mail is hosted at Yahoo, you need to log into your Yahoo account from the web and change your password there. Then you can change it on your iMac. If you only change it on your iMac, you won't be able to access your mail.
The way the mail/preferences/account changes work is that you make any changes you want, then click on another account or close that window, and you'll be prompted if you want to save your changes.
