Hoping you can help me with a similar problem.
I have a Macbook Air 11' from October 2010, bought refurbished from Apple in late 2011. I normally stream content on my LG 46" HD Ready 1080p LCD-TV (model 46ld550n) through my Apple TV, but recently our internet has been so unstable that I decided to buy a HDMI cable to avoid getting interrupted by slow bandwidth in the middle of a movie.
As such, I bought an HDMI to Mini DisplayPort cable. However, whenever I watch something (or even just mirror the image), the image is cut every 2-3 minutes by a short flash or black screen (sometimes with a short crackling sound) and even at times a noise image (the one you used to get in the old days when there was no antenna signal). Needless to say, this is terribly annoying, especially since this was supposed to be the failproof back-up solution. Any ideas on how to fix this?
I have a NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB graphics card and run OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion.
Please help a fellow disgruntled mac-lover

Best thing is to try a better , or just different, cable or adaptor. The cheap ones don't tend to work as well (or at all), but even then it's a little hit and miss for some people.
What brand cable are you using?
I had the same problem and switched to iWires (frankly overpriced cable) from the Apple store expecting to return it with the same problem, but it's been perfect for a year :-)

I posted this a while back under the title: External Monitor goes black using mini-display port to DVI cable. I received no reponses except 4 people were having this issue also. I am starting to wonder if its the mini-display port connectors in side the MacBook Pro that is the issue, and Apple doesn't want to have to replace the motherboard.
I am exeriencing an issue with my new MacBook Pro(summer 2012). When connected to an external monitor, using the mini display port to DVI cable, after a period of time all of a sudden my screen will flicker and go to black. Sometimes I just get a screen of snow. I have to then power down the Macbook, disconnect the mini diplay port, boot the Macbook back up and then plug the mini diplay port back into the laptop. It may work for a while then the issue happens again.
I called Apple and they recommend I take it into an Apple store. Problem is an Apple store is 2 hours away and I am not sure they will be able to replicate the problem, since it doesn't happen right away. I know it's not a monitor issue, since I have switched out the monitors and the issue still occurs. I have reformated the HDD many times. Still not sure what is causing the issue. Any thoughts?

Alright here's my situation;
I have a MacBook Pro 13" from late 2010,
I recently bought a Rocketfish MDP to HDMI adapter,
I turned my 47" LG on and plugged the wires in,
I plugged the adapter into my laptop,
The screen went blue
The image of my desktop appeared for 3 seconds
The image dissapeared
Now when I plug everything in again absolutely nothing happens. The screen doesn't go blue and the TV doesn't recognize that anything is going on. I tried downloading gfxCardStatus and switching to 'Dynamic Sqitching' mode and it still won't work. I've tried plugging everything in and rebooting my laptop but that doesn't work either. NOTHING WORKS!
Any tips or strange tricks that I should try?

I ve tryied all combinations -close tv, restart macbook, change hdmi port,- somehow it worked again until i unpluged from battery charger and mni display port.. When connected again, nothing happens, just for a second i saw wallpaper and then NO SIGNAL on tv screen...

I bought the mini dvi to HDMI adapter from bestbuy. I connected it and got a background and sometimes a mouse pointer. I looked at all the posts in this thread until I got to one that said "hit command and F1" and Voila! I was floored. Whoda thunk. Thanks whoever psted.
