Found a rather simple way to get around all the omissions and flaws of iTunes 11 - rollback to 10.7...

Wake me up when DJ and cover flow are back, an option to deactivate cover art in every view is introduced, compilations finally got a coherent way of being sorted and displayed, iTunes stops changing song info randomly, high bitrate songs can be converted to lower AACs during synch etc...

Ah, just wake me up for itunes 12.

The most important steps have to be made -before- upgrading:

    1. Don't allow iTunes to manage the library, but create and manage your own media storage location manually. (This is a fundamental decision and should best be made when starting managing music with iTunes).

    2. Download 10.7 and keep it somewhere safe (just saw a couple of hints where you still can find it).

    3. Export your library and copy all .itl, .itdb and .xml files from your "my music/iTunes" folder to a safe backup place.

If you have done that -before- upgrading to 11, you just:

    - uninstall 11

    - install your old 10.7

    - copy the backups of the data files back into the iTunes folder

You'll get 10.7 at the point you made your backup. All changes you made in 11 will be lost, but that shouldn't be too much considering the relatively short time since it's been released.

Maybe step 1 is not that important, but at least it keeps you from iTunes making changes to your media as soon as you start a new version.

To roll back to iTunes 10.7 first download a copy of the installer from here, uninstall iTunes and suppporting software, i.e. Apple Application Support & Apple Mobile Device Support. Reboot. Restore the pre-upgrade version of your library database as per the diagram below, then install iTunes 10.7.

See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to scan the media folder and catch up with any changes made since the backup file was created.

Looks like a few success stories in this thread.

In WinXp I uninstalled the awful iTunes 11 lacking any intelligent UI design, then restored my iTunes library and prefs in Documents and Settings and My Documents from before the 'upgrade' to v11, and finally installed v10.7 downloaded from an archive of older versions you find by simply googling 'download old iTunes version'.

Worked perfectly, and I have v10's old but so much more functional, clean and efficient UI back, and my iPod's content back in the same sidebar as local content.

v11 is appalling and unless there are major changes to return the previous UI even as an option, v10.7 will be the final version of iTunes I ever use. Which will mean my current iPods will be the final iPods I ever purchase. What a shame. I guess this is what happens when form trumps function and leadership drops the ball big time :-(

None of that (like Folder scan) would be necessary if people only backed up...

ITunes 11 is the biggest pain in the neck going! I can't sync my phone or find anywhere that will help me! If I click <File-Devices> the sync is greyed out and the <sync now> button on my iPhone is greyed out

I have no idea what I'm doing help?

Is there any way to export out of iTunes 11? I very unwisely have build enormous playlists and have not backed them up in weeks. There had better be a way. This is a huge breach of trust for me as an Apple customer.

Roll back instruction here in this thread. This takes the library back to the state it was at when you upgraded. If you've created new regular playlists with iTunes 11 you can export them first. If you've made new smart playlists, display the rules and take screenshots.
