Try control clicking the VIP mail box and deleting it from Mail on the Mac.
If you can see the MBP in the Finder sidebar, mount it, and you can drag the application to the Mac. I suggest putting on the desktop. It may not work though. If there is a slash line through the MBP Mail application, it will not work.

Thanks, I looked again, there is no way of deleting the entire VIP. I think it is part of the cloud but, unlike the contacts or notes there are no local VIP lists. I think actually I can reformulate the question.

I understood you only wanted to delete the VIP mail box on the Mac, but not your iPhone.
I do not have a VIP mailbox in Mail on my Mac. I deleted it.
I tried to delete the VIP mail box on iCloud and couldn't.
Try this on the Mac:

Thanks for getting back to me.
While I didn't fully understand your explanation in the first reply, your confirmation that you don't have a VIP on your Mac it gave me an idea, so you deserve full credit
I simply renamed VIPSenders.plist in ~/Library/Mail/MailData. Then I opened mail again and the VIP list was gone.
Now, I have to repeat this every time I update the VIP list but that's OK with as the solution is as clean and transparent as it gets. In addition should the VIP pop up again for a different reason, I know what I have to do.
