Is it safe to install ms office on mac ? I have read on one of the websites that older versions of MS Office had a vulnerability that allowed a maliciously-crafted document to install executable code on the user’s machine.

Older versions of Office will not run on newer Macs with Lion or Mountation Lion.

    Very safe.

Name the web site. Older version? What version?

A lot of nonsense you are reading. Install Office 2011.

Or if your really paranoid about then don't install anything from Microsoft. It isn't really necesaary for anything.

I think the OP has been reading mis-leading information or information pertaining to Office on a pc hence the term "install executable code."

I agree. I thought I would just throw out there the fact that Microsoft code isn't really necessary for the vast majority of the Mac users.

MS Office is regularly updated to prevent vulnerabilities from being exploited, just like MacOS and many other software products. As software gets older many times vendors cease support, opening up older products to exploitation of vulnerabilities. This is not just a Microsoft delema.

One reply you received notes that "older" versions won't run on a Mac.. Of course, since this reply isn't specific, it is hard for you to make an informed decison. It is true that M/S Office 2004 has problems with Mountain Lion since previous MacOS versions supported Rosetta, an Apple Mac OSX bridge technology that enabled applications such as Office for Mac 2004 to run on the latest chip architecture for Mac. Because Lion and M/L no longer supports Rosetta, applications that relied on it will no longer function under the new MacOS. Therefore Office 2004 won't run on M/L.

The safest approach is to install M/S Office 2011 to avoid both issues described above, and update it regurlarly.
