When I restarted my old eMac, it could no longer find the internet.

 

I believe the setting have changed or are no longer valid.

 

I tried to use Network Setup Assistant but it always ends up asking me for a DHCP Client ID# or PPPoE acoount information to proceed.

 

I configured this eMac's at several location and with different providers and never had to give this information.

 

Anyone know the default settings that will allow my eMac to find the internet?

    Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON?

     

    The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of System Preferences>Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.

     

    Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...

     

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

     

    Then Apply.

    The link you provided gave me the answer. Choosing "Automatic" for Location opens ALL ports, and the best chance for connection. Thank you.

    Actually, I had to get the network up, to use Mail (1.3.11). I can reach the internet via safari, but I can't send or recieve messages,as Mail won't go online.

     

    I'm getting reoccuring error messages, such as:

     

    Message delivery failure

     

    "The server "smtp.mac.com" cannot be contacted on port 25.

     

    You can try to send using a different server. All messages will use this server until you quit or change your network settings.

     

    Send message using  [iCloud       ]"

     

    But the server was set to "smpt.mac.com:xxxxxxxxxxx (my email prefix) when I sent it. And if I set the outgoing server to iCloud, that doesn't work either and the message will say use  "smpt.mac.com..."   BTW, I had to set up another account, because the existing account was blank and greyed out for "Email Address" and my email address was under "Description" (?)

     

    I was planning to retreive remaining files on the eMac, by sending them in attachments to my iMac. But I can't configure Mail 1.3.11 to find the internet.

     

    I think I need to delete the Mail accounts and start over with proper settings.

     

    Should I check the SSL box (which changes the port) or not?

     

    Is the "Incoming Mail Server": mail.mac.com or imap.mac.com or imap.mail.mac.com (like my current iMac 10.6.8)?

     

    Can I set up a new password, don't recall the old one?

     

    It seems like the old and the new protocols are colliding here.

    Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.

    You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.

     

     

    iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...

     

     

    On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.

     

     

    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:

              •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com

              •          SSL Required: Yes

              •          Port: 993

              •          Username: example@me.com (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)

              •          Password: Your iCloud password

    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:

              •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com

              •          SSL Required: Yes

              •          Port: 587

              •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes

              •          Username: example@me.com (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)

              •          Password: Your iCloud password

              •

    Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

    Very comprehensive reply, only to be outdone by my ignorance. Actually, I do understand most of this, having done it for my iMac 10.6.8 transition to iCloud. (I almost forgot about my grand intension to upgrade directly to OS 10.8, but that's for another discussion)

     

    First, Mail (1.3.11) is in an error message loop, trying to deliver to a server it will never find. But more unfortunately, Safari can no longer find the server. I can't open Mail from the dock nor does it offer a force quit option. Went into Activity Monitor to kill it. I also have Opera which can't find the internet either.

     

    So now I'm back to square one, but there is something I should mentioned. Once, long before the iCloud transition, my eMac and iMac shared router acess to the cable modem. But the old Belkin was slowing down my high speed internet, and not using my eMac, I removed the router and went modem direct to the iMac. I put the eMac into hibernation. Just recently, I reconnected the router and while the iMac didn't mind, the eMac is obviously having major network issues.

     

    I should have intiated the problem from that perspective.

     

    Regardless, I need to go through all the  "Network" settings, before I can procede with the Mail settings and intergration to iCloud.

    I'm just spinning my wheels.

     

    Perhaps I should just get the appropriate firewire cable and / or adapter and transfer the files that way.

     

    Would the network situation have any bearing on that?

     

    Can the procedure be selective or should I just grab everything and sought it all out on the iMac?

     

    Any suggestions on procedure?

    Where are you trying to transfer to & which files?

     

    Is it local, like same room too? Have you tried Ethernet directly to other Mac?

     

    What is the other Mac?

    Before I answer your inquiries or whether I need to, note that I took the DNS Server # and search domain that appears in Network Preference on my current iMac and appled them to the same fields that were blank in the eMac preferences. Safari came up with the de fault Goggle News Page and all links open.

     

    So that's great, but Mail is a still a mess.

     

    It defaults to the existing account which has been corrupted. The field "Email Address" is blank and greyed out. That is why I created a new account and considered deleting the existing.

     

    Anyhow, that's where I'm at right now, and I will return to firewire migration (between this computer and my current iMac, sitting side by side) if Mail settings can't be resolved.

    My eMac is shakey and needs a system (OSX) reload or later (OSX) software.

     

    I've had it since 2003, and it was my first experience using a computer.

     

    I performed actions, I would never do today, such as trashing downloaded applications that should have been properly uninstalled.

     

    I may have even trashed files,I didn't recognize or comprehend.

     

    And so, while Safari can open links on Goggle News page, it quits when any search is attempted.

     

    I just want to grab the remaining photos, text and documents, before I reload 10.3 or load 10.5.

     

    Can you connect T100 ethernet cables between Macs?

     

    Is that what you are suggesting?

     

    Other Mac is an iMac 10.6.8

    Sorry, for the delay.

     

    OK, what reaction will my iMac have to be being connected to the eMac via T100 cable ?

     

    Can I do this "hot swap" style or should the computers be in a certain state, before hand?

     

    Will it, inherently, understand that it is another Mac, at the other end of the ethernet cable?

     

    Or, will I have go through Network Diagnostics to establish the connection?

     

    If the latter, do I treat the eMac as the ethernet (cable) or a LAN network...?

     

    What will I encounter and how should I respond?

    Can be hot plugged, you'll need to enable File Sharing & check the IP of the Ethernet port, then...
