The versions may be out of sync. Run Software Update to see if there are any updates that weren't captured in the backup.
If that doesn't do it, you may have to reinstall. Use whatever method you used when you first purchased the app. Disk or registration code.

How did you install iWork from the beginning? Time Machine seems to not store important files that seems being missing. If you installed from a CD do that again and do the Software updates.

No, your documents are not store in the applicatio. It is only the application you reinstall.

thanks very much... by the way... do you know anything about "Applications Support" folder ? apparently if i can recover this from my ext hard drive all my apps like iworks, garage band and office 2011 will work again... but it comes up with messages saying it cant be modified as it is part of the OSX. cheers

There are two "Applications Support", one in MacHD / Library and one in Users/ your name / Library.. It is the first one you need but if you have the DVDs the applications came on you can install from the DVD and do the Software update as posted in an earlier post..

managed to do a complete reinstall of office 2011, and iworks etc. all good now thanks everyone..
