So, we have an iMac that we are giving to another family member and I want to erase the hdd.  Normally you insert the install disk that came with the computer and erase from disk utility.  However, since we upgraded to 10.8 from the App Store the install disk is now an older OS and "no cigar".

How do I erase this thing and reinstall 10.8 that I own from the App Store?

Thanks in advance.

Well, I continued to do the command R after the gray screen and it took on the fourth try or so.  No way I can figure out what was happening but all is well now !!

Glad to hear it worked, however...

If you purchased Mountain Lion at the app store, then the license is not transferable and is tied to your Apple ID forever. This means that the recipient will not be able to reinstall unless they use your Apple ID. So you can either share your Apple ID information and continue to own and control the Mac which will allow them to use your Apple ID, or you can erase Mountain Lion and reinstall the original OS as required by the software license agreement. The recipient can then purchase Mountain Lion with their own Apple ID and won't have a problem reinstalling if that should be necessary.

Thanks - that makes sense.  It is a close relative but I think I'll have her set up an Apple account for her own use.  The main issue is that I was finally able to erase my hard drive and send her a "clean machine"

You can easily erase your hard drive by booting from your original install disk - insert install DVD, boot or restart by hitting the C key, then erase the internal drive and reinstall the original OS. Your recipient will not be able to set up an account to purchase the OS without an erase since the OS currently installed is tied to your ID already.

Got it - the same thought dawned on me last evening.

    Thanks again !
