Welcome to the Apple Community.
iCal is a calendar it doesn't hold contacts, but it will use your contacts from your contacts file. What is it you wish to do.

In the calendar I write the names of my contacts when I'm having an appointment. So what I hope to do:
Copy the names from the contacts directly to the time and date I'm citing them. So when I have to bill them I could only check on their names. Do you know how to do this?

If they have an email address you can add them as attendees/invitees.
