Try a PRAM reset:
- Shut down your Mac.
- Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
- Turn on the computer.
- Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
- Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
- Release the keys.
Any unusual noises coming from it?

Thanks. Tried this but no luck! It did spit out my start-up disk, however!

Have you tried booting to your startup disc? (Hold Option on boot to access the startup manager, which will let you choose between internal HD and optical drive)

Is the "startup" disc the same as the "install" disc? I have attempted to start with the install disc using command+C. I'll try your method.
OK. I see a curser! That must mean something! But it won't move. Nothing else happening. <sigh>.

OK. got to the Leopard installer screen--took a very long time. "Select a Destination" to install screen in blank! That can't be good! Still waiting...
