Not that it matters now, but had yours been affected, it would have been better to erase the entire drive instead of simply emptying the trash. You might want to keep that in mind in case you do need a new hard drive.

Thank you babowa. Mac Support told me that they would be destroying the hard drive, and I didn't need to bother erasing anything, just back it up. I was not comfortable with that, so I left the applications but erased my documents, files, photos, etc. I believe it would have been better as well as faster to have erased the entire hard drive like you suggest.  Even talking to Mac Support to reinstall my back up was confusing. My original rep wanted to have me do it a complicated way that was not working. He put me on hold and his supervisor told him how to find "restore time machine", which then went smoothly.

Great to hear things worked out for you; not that I would not trust anyone in particular, but I would not ever give anyone a drive with any information on it whatsoever.

Hard drive was replaced about 6 months ago by a local computer shop, so when I got the e-mail I thought great typical £300 wasted as I have little chance of being refunded as it wasn't an authorised shop, just one I always use and trust. Well a big thankyou to Apple as I have been refunded the full £300 after sending proof that I had actually had it done, I will always buy Apple products in the future now , thanks. Andy
