i have a rft file that i want to save in pages and delete or archive the original rtf. i open the rtf in pages and now i want to save in the same folder that the rtf was in. ML and Pages however want to save this to the cloud. so i - idiot that i am - pulldown to DESKTOP, save the document to the desktop with the same name as the rtf excepting the pages file extension - and then i open finder and MOVE this file back to where the original rtf came from since i am just saving it out as a pages doc.
is there a way to simplify this.
it is mind numbing to do on five documents let alone 10 or more.
i am not using the cloud for this and don't want to use the cloud for this yet...
You should have changed that save... selection location to your home directory from iCloud. Then, clicked the down-arrow next to the file name, so you could expand the dialog box, uncheck “hide extension,” and use the available icons as a navigation aid to your original .rtf file folder. Pages will remember this location on the next save, which is an improvement if all your .rtf are contained in the one folder.

so i have tried this (didn't see the hide extension checkbox) but - am i correct in understanding that i a have to do this for every rtf file that i am saving as pages? then once i do it once it will remember the folder that was last selected?
i mean, from the sounds of it the DEFAULT is to save on the cloud and there is no way to change this and this means that at all times i have to navigate back to the location of the file that i just opened in order to save it?

You can change the default from iCloud by copying & pasting this command in Terminal. In the past, I have had to re-do the command after a period of time.
defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSDocumentSaveNewDocumentsToCloud -bool false
Also, the latest version of Mountain Tweaks has a button to do it if you're not comfortable using Terminal.

My original response to you was not entirely accurate. This time, I walked through the Save ... and Export scenario and they behave differently with iCloud enabled.
I just walked through the process of opening two .rtf documents in my home directory and saving them as .pages documents in the same location. Pages remembers the previous open location on subsequent requests. It does not remember the previous saved location, and defaults to iCloud, even though one has specified document opens “On my Mac” in the original open dialog.
When choosing File > Save ... to save the .rtf content as a .pages document, Pages presents a default iCloud destination. I deselected iCloud and chose my home directory to save the .pages document. I then closed the current .pages document. A File > Open... produced an open dialog in my home directory. Opening the next .rtf file followed by a Save... resulted in a repeat of this paragraph scenario.
So, you would indeed find it an endurance test to open and save files to the same location.
If you were opening .rtf files and exporting them in another format (e.g. PDF, Word), you would specify the destination folder once, and subsequent exports would remember that location, by passing iCloud entirely, unless you chose it originally.
Update: It appears that while I was typing this, Peggy has offered a solution.
