    Symptoms and background:

    On my iPhone 5 (running iOS 6, and then 6.0.1), when using the iPhone speakers it would not play music, system sounds like the preloaded text tones, keyboard sounds, and similar. The speakers would play my custom ringtones, calls on speakerphone worked, and regular ringtones worked. When I looked at the Airplay menu, the option for iPhone was never there. However, the option for headphones was, even though nothing was plugged into the headphones jack.

    Solution for me:

    The fix that worked for me was the following:

    I went into Settings>Sounds and then under Ringer and Alerts, I turned off the Change With Buttons setting. I also turned the Ringer and Alert volume slider all the way down and then back up again. Then, the things that hadn't been working through the speakers began working. Next, I went back into the settings and turned the Change with Buttons setting back on and everything continued to work.

    I'm not sure if I needed to do both things to make this work. My guess is that turning the Ringer and Alerts volume slider down and up in the Sounds pane was probably unnecessary, but in case it was needed I included it in this post.

    Hope this helps someone.

    So finally i decided to shut down my phone and hard boot it giving it 15-20 mins of complete rest. turns out the vibrate alert as well as the phone ear piece are working fine now. Very frankly apple should have at least responded here instead of sticking to their policy of "ignore it till Apple finds a fix and is able to glorify it". Wasted my time doing something that i am so used to doing with my windows PCs. seems like Apple is headed in the same direction.

    And i spoke too soon. The vibrate alert worked for some time and is dead again. I give up.

    It has been over 2 weeks since I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 6.0.1. My iPhone speaker has been working fine ever since the update. I know I had tried several things in between like shutting off all background apps, turning my phone off & on, plus changing some settings related to sound/volume & nothing worked until I did the update.

    *So that should be your first step is to update to iOS 6.0.1.

    The update did not fix my headphone or volume with external speakers (ie docking or auxiliary cable for car stereo) issue! I managed to resolve the issue after many attempts of searching the settings for something that seemed like it could be causing the issue & I found the Volume Limit had been set/modified by either the iOS 6 &/or 6.0.1 update or more likely from connecting my phone to my computer to charge it (this is when my issues first began). It has now been over a week & my headphones volume is still working. This is the second step to take;

    *Go into your Settings<Music<Volume Limit setting & adjust it back up to full & you may want to for good measures turn the control off. When I went into mine I found it was set below 50%!

    I hope this helps some of you!

    Ever since the loss of Steve Jobs this company is really slipping! This crappy untested iOS would never have been released with Jobs at the helm! I am a software developer & this iOS has so many bugs in it!! My battery draining excessively fast issue has been resolved.

    I meant to say battery draining issue has NOT been resolved. Also the characters have been changed so here is the second step again;

    * Go into your Settings - Music - Volume Limit

    Still having the issue on my 4, decided to just upgrade to the 5 since I needed to know when people call me for my job.   I am still holding out that maybe 6.1 will address this issue since this isnt just a few people are having the issue.

    I have been surfing the Internet for 6 weeks to find a solution to the sound problem. All searc results seem to come back here. The disappearing sound is affecting my iPod touch, my husband's iPhone 4 and my iPhone 4S. The sound disappears unexpectedly. This has become a huge problem with our alarm clocks. I am seeing links to possibly AirPlay, Bluetooth and docking. I wanted to send a bug report to Apple but apparently normal consumers can't do this?

    I won't repeat the "me too". Just want this extremely irritating anomaly fixed. Fortunately we have an older iPod that can't be upgraded to IOS 6 and it is behaving as usual.

    If anybody has a solution to the "disappearing sound when docked" I would be grateful to know.

    I'm having the exact same issue. Never had a problem until I upgraded. I was listening to an audio book as I was upgrading. Every once in a while they come back but not for long. I've tried restarting many times.  Apple please fix this bug.

    Solution:

    I have an iPhone 4 & my speaker & volume issues have been resolved. These were the key steps;

    *Update to iOS 6.0.1 - This should resolve the iPhone speaker not working issue.  After the update my speaker began to work but my headphones & external speaker volume was barely audible.

    *Go into your Settings > Music > Volume Limit setting > adjust it back up to full. When I went into mine I found it was set below 50%!  I hope this helps some of you!

    Thirdly - Do not upgrade your hardware as this is a  software related issue.  Save your money!

    Let me know if it works.

    Now, my 4s left speaker doesn't seem to work either. Though i cannot recall, if we had sterio musics. My iphone is 1 month old and i dun think we go around testing every parts untill we bump into it.
    In some other forum, i read that, left speaker is actually a mic. Could anyone confirm that? If its false, a solution to the problem would be appreciated.
