    To clarify:

I just tried the xxx-xxx-xxxx format and it didnt work even after turning off/on my imessage on my iphone.  But after entering the x-xxx-xxx-xxxx format and turning off/on again on my iphone it worked within seconds.  Hope this helps.

    I'm using iphone 4s iOS 6, macbook pro, 10.8.2

    Ralph,

I am using OS 10.8.2 and iPhone 5 iOS 6.0.1. However, even my phone doesn't receive iMessages sent to my phone number. It only accepts those sent to my Apple ID. Please let me know how to activate iMessage on my phone number as well!

    HI,

I was looking at this again myself just yesterday while I was posting here.

My own iPhones (I have two) have one Apple ID each.

One is linked to Messages App on the Mac and that particular iPhone Number.

However on both of the iPhones when I look in Settings > Messages > Send and receive the actual number for that iPhone is Greyed out.

Today nearly 24 hours later after I had tried to set one phone Number and removed the Apple ID to see if the number would pop up as dark text I received one of the Messages Alert text to say it wanted to add the second Phone Number and the Apple ID from the Messages app and other iPhone.

On Checking my second phone I find that the 1st Phones number is now an Alternative as well as the 1st phone's Apple ID although neither are ticked.

ALSO the iPhone Number itself is now ticked.

Messages is now showing both Apple IDs and both iPhone Numbers (Something I was trying to Avoid) although the second phones detail's are not active.

    So...

It seems that the OS X 10.8.2 and iOS 6.0.1 combo does  isolate the iPhone Number.

I did the Mac first (which also updates Messages to version 7.0.1) and the the iOS devices.

I did remove the Apple ID on one iPhone  and this iPhone now has it's Number ticked (even though it is still greyed out).

The Notification on the Mac should not have happened in my book (Different iPhone Number and Different Apple ID.

    NOTE.

When you do remove the listed Apple ID you get a message warning showing up  that says iMessages anywhere will not be able to use the Apple ID

This does not appear to be true as I also removed the 1st phones Apple ID  from the list on the second iPhone and the 1st is still listing it and accepting calls (as is the Mac)

Dude, you lost me. Sorry, but I am a newbie and did not understand all that you said! I do not mind having the phone number greyed on my iPhone as long as I am able to recieve iMessages on it! Please let me know how to do that as currently, I have my Apple ID, @me.com and @icloud.com addresses setup!

    HI,

On the iPhone remove the Apple ID.  (Settings > Messages > Send and Receive)

Wait for small amount of time.

In the same Settings turn Off iMessages.

Wait for some time (about 2 mins)

Restart the iMessages part of Messages.

(My Mac did not tell me for nearly 24 hours and and that point I checked the iPhone again and the greyed out number was ticked).

exactly my experience. I waited for over an hour and never received the confirmation message. Then I turned iMessage off and on again, and then my phone number appeared on the phone as an option to receive message. I ticked the option and almost instaneously it was added on my iMac as well. I confirmed accepted on the mac and then again almost instantly received a notification on the phone that the iMac had been added.

You are right!  As soon as I addressed the problem on my phone first, it worked for my ipad and allowed me to add addressess, etc.

Wife and I each have iPhone 5's. We have an iMac. I bought an iPad mini this weekend and could not figure how to get iMessage on the mini to show my phone number as an option. My choices were my email, wife's ph number or add a new email. I was on the phone with Apple for an hour and they could not figure this out. I turned everything off and back on to no avail. I factory reset the mini to no avail. I stumbled across this post from TechAddict and FINALLY I could add my phone number! The key is to Add your phone number on Messages on your Mac as an email [1 xxx-xxx-xxxx]. It is imperative to turn off the email on the iPad as a sending/receiving source or the verification from Apple to your iPad will not work. Then I turned off Messages and FaceTime on the iPad and deleted my account from iCloud settings on iPad. I then powered off iPad just for the heck of it. When I turned it back on and signed in to iCloud, this made it work. When I turned Messages and FaceTime back on, my phone number was finally an option. Here is a summary of the steps:

    1. Add your missing phone number as a new E-Mail on your Mac under preferences once Messages is open.

    2. Enter the phone number on Messages>Preferences as this format 1 xxx-xxx-xxxx

    3. On iPad go to Settings>Messages>Send/Receive>Delete email

    4. On iPad go to Settings>Messages>Off

    5. On iPad go to Settings>FaceTime>Off

    6. On iPad go to Settings>iCloud>Delete Account

    7. Power off iPad.

    8. Power on iPad.

    9. On iPad go to Settings>iCloud>Sign in

    10.On iPad go to Setting>Messages>On

11.On iPad go to Settings>Messages>Send/Receive and choose the phone number that FINALLY is available and either delete or keep email address-I chose to delete the email address and use the ph # only.

    12.On iPad go to Settings>FaceTime>On

I hope this saves someone the 5 hours I wasted!

Is there a way to make this work under 10.7.4? My macbook is too old for 10.8.
