Is there a way to add more emoticons to the desktop Messages app?

In System Preferences > Language & Text > Input Sources, check Keyboard & Character Viewer.

    Close System Preferences.

Activate the menu next to the menubar date to show the character viewer.

From the character viewer left panel, select Emoji. In your opened Message application, place your cursor where you want the extended emoji character and double-click from the list in the character viewer. Your emoji choices are categorized as People, Nature, Objects, Places, and Symbols.

There is an Edit > Insert Smiley, which is a duplication of the grey smiley selector in the message window. Otherwise, you will need the solution I shared above.

VikingOSX - someone is asking emoticons in the below thread. For some reason, I'm not able to post on that thread????  I was wondering if you'd go help the person because others are saying there are no emoticons in OSX.
