The Xerox web site shows the Phaser 6100 uses a Host-based printing system. There is no mention of it supporting Postscript, hence the lack of any output when using the Generic Postscript driver included with Lion. There is also no mention of it supporting PCL, so that rules out the Generic PCL driver included with Lion.
So unless there is an open source driver that will support this Xerox proprietary printer language, although I could not locate one from the usual places, then it would appear that Lion and any future OS X will not be compatible with this printer.
One workaround for the iMac running Lion could be to print via a shared printer queue, running on one of the Windows computers. Have a read of this blog about how to do this.

As a workaround, I've added it as a shared printer from one of my PowerMacs running 10.5. That way, I can also use the old LaserWriter IIf that only works on AppleTalk. I'd much rather not need another computer running to use the printer, but I suppose it's a workable solution. Too bad there isn't a CUPS driver for the 6100.

Apparently, Xerox recenly released a bunch of drivers for Lion and Mountain Lion. They appeared in my latest sytem update for use when setting up printers. Unfortunately, while they included drivers for many Phaser 61XX models, they left out Phaser 6100. I tried all of them and none would drive the 6100.
And, don't you love the Xerox Support policy - free support for products under warranty but anything else is $25 a call!
