It's not only that - I didn't even know I was getting an iTunes update, nor did many other people. It came through as a "camera software update", so why should I have known to check for problem reports about a new version of iTunes before installing it? There's another thread here asking whether the user's computer has been "hacked" - and in fact it has... by Apple.

To be honest I think I'm going to live with it. After a lot of fiddling I've finally got it a bit more like how I had it before. It has major annoyances and bugs compared to the old version but I just don't want the hassle of reverting and then probably not being able to update anything without thoroughly checking they aren't trying to sneak another iTunes update in by the back door. I've already sent feedback to Apple and I will do so again whenever I find something about it that doesn't work or has been unnecessarily changed. (Another I found that doesn't seem to be mentioned so far is that Shuffle is now global, not set for each playlist. OK, you only have to turn it on or off manually, but that's yet another two-steps-to-achieve-one-goal problem.)

Lack of Cover Flow and Show Duplicates are probably the two really major flaws for me.

Beyond the problems of iTunes 11, Apple commited the same in case of Music app on iOS6.

On iPhone cower flow and lyrics can still be used, but on iPad it looks like iTunes 11, no lyrics available, covers messed up among albums. I have not tested further.

NO, it did not "come as a camera update"... !

It came as iTunes 11, but iTunes is an Apple update, part of the system, and as such, is listed under system updates! What you saw, was that there was Also an update to the Camera RAW component, and you failed to flip down the arrow and see the rest of the listed updates.. ;-)

iTunes is an app, surely? I'm almost certain that iPhoto and other app updates are not listed as system updates - or that previous iTunes updates were. Anyhow, to be fair I would have probably installed it anyway since I would not have expected Apple to mess up one of their core apps so completely! And I do have a full Time Machine backup that I could simply restore the entire system with, if it was enough of a problem to warrant it... I already had to do that a few months ago when the 10.7.4 update broke the WiFi sharing. It's just not quite at that level this time, for me. But I'm really hoping they restore some of the things they've taken away at the next update.

    Hi PizzaCake

you safed my day. Your instructions are clear and complete. Following them gave me back the 10.7 version with

all features and restoring the Library was also a piece of cake. Accept my gratitude for sharing this knowledge

    with us. Thanks again.

Sorry to be a pain, but I'm a music guy, not a computer guy.  I've read everything I can find on the subject, but I'm still not feeling confident that I should try this.  If I've been running Time Machine, do I still need to use Terminal and Pacifist during the process of uninstalling 11 and restoring 10.7?  I already downloaded a 10.7 dmg, but I'm not even sure I needed to do that since I have Time Machine.  I really (really) hate version 11, so I'm pretty determined to get back to 10.7 despite my lack of computer savvy.  So, I'm hoping that I can accomplish this with some expert help, and without having to go through any major headaches.  So, I've read a few comments about it being easier to do for Time Machine users, but I'm hoping somebody can thoroughly explain what I need to do.  I've never even used Time Machine, btw.  I'm on a 27" iMac (a little less than 2 years old), running OS 10.6.8.

Btw, I've used 11 a bit over the past couple of days, but have not synced my iPod since upgrading.  Would that mean that I shouldn't expect any problems using the iPod, once I've restored 10.7 successfully?

Everybody seems to be talking about the loss of cover flow, and I miss it too, but for me the biggest issue by FAR was the re-design of the search feature.  For someone with a large collection (and a lot of data entered, such as personnel on jazz recordings), the search feature was one of THE best things about iTunes, and I used it all the time.  I can't even begin to describe how they've butchered it now, and how handicapped I feel by the change.

I've learnt over the years of owning an iMac, iPad etc NEVER to jump like a lemming when Apple brings out anything new software upgrades e.g. this new version of iTunes or iOS updates like iOS 6.  When I heard of this new version I went on YouTube and watched the Apple Keynote presentation on iTunes and decided that the new version was as far as I was concerned AWFUL so I didn't download it and saved myself a lot of grief.

jimR56: In a parallel discussion string (I really dislike iTunes 11. How do I revert to an earlier version? ) I posted the following:

"For all those who use Time Machine:

Really, the easiest way to replace unacceptable updates like iTunes v.11.0 is to use Time Machine's restore option. This option allows individual s/w components to be restored. However, merely restoring the iTunes.app won't cut it.  It is also wise to restore the whole iTunes Library where the iTunes.itl file is located.  Go to your Home Directory > Music > iTunes and right click on the iTunes folder.  You should then see a pop up that offers the restore option.  This will restore the supporting files that iTunes.app refers to when it starts up and when it responds to user requests."

I should add that if you have used v.11.0 and added content to your new library, you will have to re-ad that content -- obviously, because it will not appear in your old v.10.7 library.

psquare11, thanks for responding so quickly.  Much appreciated.  I had already read your comment about restoring via Time Machine, but as I said, I'm not very computer-savvy.  So, if you don't mind, a few questions:

    1.  What are "s/w components?

    2.  I'm on a Mac, have been for years, and have next to zero experience with PC's.  "Right click" is alien to me (seriously).  I tried Control-clicking on the iTunes folder, but I see no "restore" option.

    3.  Do I need to uninstall 11 before using the Time Machine restore function?  If so, how do I do that?

    4.  Was I correct that I don't need the 10.7 dmg that I downloaded?  If I do need to re-install 10.7 using the dmg, do I do that after uninstalling 11, but before the Time Machine restore?

This is what I meant when I said "I'm hoping somebody can thoroughly explain what I need to do" (as in step by step).  If I left out anything important, please fill in the blanks for me.  Also, I'm hoping that my iPod (not synced since I installed 11) will not be affected by all of this, but let me know if I should expect problems with that after restoring 10.7.

Again, thank you very much for your help.

kiripap ... Well thought out and well written.  I hope you voiced those same concerns to Apple at "Provide iTunes Feedback".

Schrodinger...I agree.  Most SW Updates are not well explained.  Most of the "info" for iTunes updates is much ado about new "cloud" features and iPod and iPad compatibilty etc etc.  I've yet to see an update in which one was allowed to take it for a test drive.

Some people apparently like iTunes 11.  CNET reviewers, for instance, say it was due for an overhaul and they seem to like it.  Thousands of Macsters are not coming to Discussions complaining.  But, as a long-time Macster I still don't care for having to jump thru so many hoops to revert to a preferred version of an app; or making it near-impossible to do so.  One of the joys of the Mac OS has been its simplicity and ease of use.
