Hey guys, my new iPad 4 was literally just delivered like 20 minutes ago and I've just finished setting it up. It will not switch between vertical and horizontal orientations. I have to turn off the screen and unlock it for it to change orientation. The side button is NOT set to lock orientation, it's set to mute, and it's not turned on anyway. I have already tried toggling it on and off.

My question is, is this a common problem? Will it keep reoccuring? I'm pretty confident that if I do a soft reset the problem will go away but I don't want to have to continue doing resets regularly. Really bums me out when a new product is already having problems.

Also, I doubt it had any affect on the tablet but thought I'd mention it anyway, the iPad was ICE cold when I opened the box.

The fact that the iPad was ICE cold may have something to do with orientation issue. You might have waited until the iPad was a little closer to room temperature before you tried setting it up.

No - what you are experiencing is not a common problem. I would try rebooting the iPad (hold down on the sleep and home buttons for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen) and if that fixes it, I wouldn't stress about it. However, of the problem does recur with any frequency at all, contact Apple or take it to an Apple store to be looked at and evaluated.

Well, it has warmed up now and I have rebooted the iPad. I'm shocked that it still won't change orientation. I've had this problem off and on with my iPad 2 that's over 2 years old now but even that goes away when I reboot it.

I guess I'm going to have to call Apple...
