You should create a different "Location" and then you can configure each location for school and everywhere else
System Preferences -> Network -> Location -> Edit Locations -> Gear icon -> Dupliate Location
Now rename the new location to School (or whatever you want), and configure it just for School, and put your Automatic location back to the default settings (or what you prefer for non-School use).
Once you have multiple locations, the Apple Menu -> Location entry will appear and allow you to switch locations from the Apple menu.

If you're inclined... Might want to ask a few questions of the folks at School (or have a look at the DHCP packets and the DNS) and work with them around setting up WPAD proxy or analogous; an automatic proxy. Here are some Safari-related details, since it doesn't use WPAD (and do check the comments on that second one). Some more reading. Might be able to improve things for everybody (or maybe everybody using Safari), after all.

If you do decide to create another location, you could also look into ControlPlane to automatically switch your location based on where you are.
