I attempted to update the ios on my Iphone 3G for the first time.  Now Itunes is telling me I have no SIM card in my Phone.  I know it is in there, it's just not being recognised.  How do I fix this?  I can't access anything on my phone right now.

Sounds like you hone was hacked or jailbroken to unlock it. If that's the case, it's now bricked.

Hacked / jailbroken devices can not be discussed here.

My phone hasn't been jail broken.  It's legit.  I'm trying to restore my saved backup, and every time I connect my phone to Itunes it says "There is no SIM card in the phone you are trying to activate"

If it wasn't jailbroken or "unlocked" by someone other than the carrier it was originally locked to, then get a replacement SIM from your carrier. It may have failed.
