I have tried using shift-click and command-click - but cannot select individual photos. If I drag over a range using the drag marquee I can select a block of photos but if the range is not to the margin the selection turns into a regular square. What is the problem?

    To select an object:  Click

To Select multiple not-contiguous objects: Command-Click

To Select multiple contiguous objects: Click on the first then shift-click on the last

Seriously. The only thing that works for me is dragging to select. Does it matter that I'm using a track pad?

This is the answer.  It's the trackpad.

Seriously? I'm afraid your question is vague. Using a track pad makes no difference.

I cannot select individual photos nor can I select non-contiguous photos. I said I could not use the shift-command click commands to any value. Nor can I drag over an area that is not a square using the select marquee for a range.  That is my problem. The only thing that works is command-a  AT that moment I did not think about the trackpad.

It occured to me when I sent that post however that the commands that require the trackpad to be used as a mouse were the commands I couldn't use. So I dragged out my mouse and viola - it worked.

However, I do appreciate your assistance. And I'm sorry if I was not clear enough for you in my initial question. That clarity would have required that I understood at that moment the trackpad was my issue. I will go back and say your post assisted me.

    Thank-you.

Here's the thing: I'm at a MBP all day long and constantly select things, individual, contiguous and non contiguous all the time, with the trackpad.

Likewise except on an iMac with a track pad - selecting all different ways works fine here

Maybe one of the trackpad preferences affects this - I have nearly all enabled
