Making an iMovie - needing to import an iPhone recording them loose the video saving audio only to use with other images.  Can't seem to place the recording into the project and then be able to move it about on the audio time line.  I received the recording in an email.

thanks for any suggstions.

I'm using iMovie '11, but this procedure should be the same:

I assume that you have already imported the clip into iMovie, and you have dragged and dropped it into a new project.

Next, in the menu bar, click Share -> Export Using QuickTime. Then, next to "Export:", choose "Sound to AIFF" and save it under a name of your choice at your preferred location.

Then open the project to which you want to add the soundtrack. From Finder, drag and drop the AIFF file onto the clip in iMovie. Bingo, there it is, and you can move it around to get the sync right, etc.
