Blade1 - have you rebuilt each individual mailbox ( folder ) yet? Seems to work for everyone else. You must select each folder and rebuild it - there is a bug that the rebuild command will not descend into subfolders.

The rebuilding works for each individual folder, and then the search works, but I've found I've had to rebuild every single time I want to look for an email if it's a newer email that wasn't  included in the original rebuild.

Still horribly broken, and I can't believe this is the way we have to search in Mail now.

    Hi mhedstrom

Yes I have tried to rebuild each individual mailbox folder on several occasions with no joy. I must add that several months I install the server module to test some of the Lion Server features and this seemed to be the start of my machine playing up.

What I have also tried - going into recovery mode and doing repair user permissions on my hard drive (using the terminal password reset utility and Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs)

I see that for some users a reinstall does not solve the problems either. I'm not going to try the reinstall option until I see a clear fix for this.

    Thanks for the message.

I am not sure whether my question fits in this threat. I discovered a search feature that I had not seen before, and unfortunately disappeared after restarting mail. When I searched for a person I got the usual response, among them the section `People'. This section contained as first line `Sender contains ...'. When I repeated the search from the `Sent' mailbox a similar field appeared, but now `Receiver contains ...' These are vey useful features if people use multiple e-mail addresses and you are not sure which one you are looking for.

Did anybody ever come accross this and knows how to reproduce it? As I said, after restarting mail the feature was gone and I could not figure out how to get it back, nor did I find any reference on the web. I would appreciate any help on this matter. Jan Willem Polderman.Search feature.jpg

I have been talking with apple for a couple of weeks about this now and there is no solution.  I have a mac mini with the server version of Lion.  From what i have seen online nothing works for the people who have the server.  I asked about downgrading to the standard Lion and I was told that I would have to manualy save all of my files to an external disc and then import them back to Lion as I wouldn't be able to simple use a time machine back up.

It would seem that rebuilding worked for me

Apple doesn't know to give this a first advice ??

Agreed, rebuilding helps but only if a folder at a time.  I have >1000 folders.  If I try to rebuild a lot of folders, then it crashes.  One can only do a few at a time, and only bottom-level ones.  I suspect this is why Apple didn't auto-rebuild everything (apart from the fact that it could take hours to get to one's email).  But the level of communication from Apple to its users about these things seems woefully inadequate.

Turns out you can shift-click across your folders. You still have to expand the sub-folders but shift-click then Mailbox->rebuild did the trick for me...

    Nice theory.

Reality is somehow different. Lion's mail search feature simply doesn't do it's very basic jobs.

Yeah I also get more results when I specify the field pretty often - the 'any field' field is BROKEN.

ARE THEY EVER GOING TO FIX THIS !!!!  C-MON APPLE !

This is a huge deal breaker for me. I have 6 different email accounts for different jobs and this is just brutal. I have to log into each and every email manually in order to search for an email.

WE NEED OS X AND IOS FIXED !  There are soooo many bugs I don't know where to begin.
