Okay - I have no idea about the technicalities of this but it appears to have worked for me so I will share in case it is of use to others.

I have only experienced this problem in the last week (after using ATV with no problems for a year and a half). I went into my time machine backups and copied the iTunes app from a month ago (10.6.1 instead of 10.6.3).

I copied the old version to my desktop and ran it from there (not overwriting 10.6.3 in the applications folder).

And everything seems to be working. 10.6.1 recognised the library with no problems, as did ATV and I watched ATV for 3 hrs straight last night with no dropouts (previously it was dropping out every 5 minutes).

I have no idea why or how but this appears to have worked for me.....

Any idea on how to click that dialog if it shows up prior to the iTunes quiting. Right now I modified your script to:

       do shell script "killall TextEdit"

But I'd rather shut iTunes down gracefully if possible.

Good point... you could try a graceful exit then check again to see if it actually shut down and force it if it didn't, something like:

    #!/usr/bin/osascript

    ###

    ### Script to check if iTunes is in a bad state (too many hanging DAAP sessions due to ATV3)

    ###

set HowManySessionsDAAP to do shell script "netstat -n | grep .3689 | wc -l"

    if HowManySessionsDAAP > "      30" then

say "There is a problem with iTunes.  I'm restarting it now."

      quit application "iTunes"

      delay 15

set HowManyiTunes to do shell script "ps -e | grep 'iTunes ' | egrep -v grep | wc -l"

      if HowManyiTunes > "       0" then

        do shell script "killall TextEdit"

              delay 10

      end if

      tell application "iTunes"

                launch

                tell browser window 1

          set collapsed to true

                end tell

      end tell

    end if

    ###

    ### Script to check if iTunes is running - if not, start and collapse

    ###

set HowManyiTunes to do shell script "ps -e | grep 'iTunes ' | egrep -v grep | wc -l"

    if HowManyiTunes = "       0" then

say "iTunes is not running.  I'm starting it now."

      tell application "iTunes"

                launch

                tell browser window 1

                        set collapsed to true

                end tell

      end tell

    end if

I added an entry to crontab (from terminal, run crontab -e) to fire every 30 minutes (edit to reflect where you store the above script).  The second half of the above script is useful even if we didn't have to deal with the iTunes 10.6.3 bug.  It just starts iTunes (and collapses) if not running.

    */30  *   *   *  * /Users/myname/iTunes-restart

I had to adjust the DAAP count (shown 30) based on the number of ATV's or iTunes clients in the house (though the runaway sessions appear to be caused by iTunes handling ATV3 connections).

As a side note, it is pretty sad that users are having to come up with scripts to solve this obvious bug in iTunes.  Would be nice if Apple at least acnowledged the problem.

Agreed!  I'm going to try downgrading iTunes from 10.6.3 to 10.6.1 as James90125 mentioned.

I am having problems with iTunes Home Sharing also.  What happens to me is once in a while home sharing doesn't work.  My AppleTV 3rd gen doesn't see it.  I go over to my Mac Pro OSX 10.7.4 Server and remove home sharing, turn it back on and it works again.  But every once in a while I have to do it again.  Never when actually using home sharing does it fail, just random days or whenever I don't use it for a while.

I had the same problem and I can confirm that this is caused by airport extreme switching automatically the radio channel. I edited my airport express radio channel by changing it from "automatic" to any of the channel between 1 & 15. I have done that last week and apple tv is still working without disconnecting.

    Devices involved :

Apple extreme wifi and wired network

    Apple tv 1 & 2

Many of us are wired and still have this issue.  I know Apple consider these units as "hobby", maybe that's why they dont acknowledge this as a problem.

Six Apple TV units that fail

Does anyone know of other options besides Apple TV units?

I had a problem that sounds similar to yours, but my particulars were different.  I had iTunes on a Vista x64 machine which stored all of the media on a custom built Solaris box running ZFS.  I had used my Apple TV2 to watch 100's of hours of shows.  Along the way, various updates happened.  I migrated the machine to Win7.  The Apple TV received firmware/software updates.  iTunes had a continuous flow of releases, etc...  Then recently I wanted to watch some shows and ran into this weird problem where I would have to restart iTunes to get the Apple TV to connect.  Once connected, it would let me watch one show, but when I tried selecting the next one in a series, no video ever would comes up, just the spinning circle of infinite waiting.  There would be no evidence of any connections to iTunes upon exiting it on the Win7 box, but restarting it immediately allowed a new connection to be made, and I can watch the next show.  Exactly one show later, no connection again....repeat until completely sick of all this junk.

Hours of reading later I decided to "repair" the Windows installation of Bonjour and have a look at the windows firewall. Somehow there were multiple entries for Bonjour (and maybe iTunes too).  Moreover, they had a weird pattern of only being selected for "Public" networks and not "Home."  Fed up with this problem, I checked both for anything that looked possibly related to Apple TV.  Now I haven't had a single problem since.  I have no idea how the settings on these would have changed, nor if I needed to actually repair the Bonjour installation.  But at least everything is working properly now.

I thought it might be useful to just document this in hopes that someone else might find value.

I  had the exact same problem with Music Files on iTunes and home sharing to my  ATV3.

So, I after trying many ways to solve it, I tried your solution:

repair Bonjour and setting the network to "Home" on Win 7 64 bits.

    It worked!

    thanks for documenting this.

I read a bunch of threads when I encountered this problem. One response I read directed me towards my router. All though I didn't find the same settings to change as the user I did update my firmware and added my all my devices IP addresses in the DNS server section. I also added the IPS somwhere else in the router.

I'm not sure which fixed the issue, the firmware update of the router, or adding the IP's in the DNS section but the issue is solved the network and homesharing is running smoothly. So I suggest looking to your router. Look through all the fields and you might see something that makes sense. Good luck, it's really cool once you get everything working properly!

I'd had this problem, too, with my ATV3. I'd been getting around it by scheduling an Automator action to run in the wee hours of the morning every day to kill iTunes and then a few seconds later, relaunch it. This has been working for a few months now without any issue.

I just upgraded to iTunes 11 and the latest iOS for the ATV3, and I tried turning the Automator action off. I've been running for 5 days now without a hiccup, whereas with the previous version, I could count on HoneSharing stopping every day.

I'm going to speculate that Apple heard our problem reports and fixed it with this rev. Can anyone else who has upgraded to 11 & 5.1.1 confirm this problem is gone now?

I had a similar setup with a 4am scheduled "kill iTunes" and a 4:05am "launch iTunes" action.

Since updating to iTunes 11 and ATv 5.1.1, I deleted the scheduled actions and haven't had a problem (probably 5-6 days now).  Use to have the problem every day.

Not trusting it completely yet, but happy so far (this was one of the more annoying bugs I've been hit with).

I can confirm that this is not the case for me. My setup up was fine until i upgraded to itunes 11.

    iMac

    Time Capsule (contains library)

    Apple Tv2

I'm about to go through my set-up and check all firmwares and settings.

Pretty F'ing annoying that i can't watch anything with reloading every 5-10 minutes.

Extremely frustrating- try watching a movie when having to go back to iTunes every 15 minutes.  Plus last week both of my Apple TV 3's almost became "bricked" trying to get a firmware update over a wired ethernet connection (another "issue" affecting thousands).

    I've got

    1. everthing on solid wired ethernet connections

    2. iMac run iTunes (latest version)

    3. Airport Extreme (1 year old)

Like others have reported- I've used caffeninate to keep the iMac awake.  I've tried using Airplay from iMac but it drops too eventually.

So given how long this has been going on- perhaps this is another "oh well" issue with AppleTV.  I really can't think of anything as flakey they've ever put out.  Can you imagine buying a whole Apple TV given this track record?

Hi everyone! Here in Spain I have the same problem. My devices are:

    - Router (provided by my telecom company provider - Movistar-)

    - MacBook Air mid 2012

    - iPhone 4

    - iPad mini

    - Apple TV 3

Last firmwares in all of them.

I've tried so many configurations and nothing works for me getting disconnected so many times.

So at the first disconnection I turn the Aple TV into sleeping mode (like switching off in the settings menu), then I go to my MBA and I close iTunes, and turn off the computer. Then I turn on the computer and start iTunes and I wake up the Apple TV and it works fine without cuts.

I hope Apple will fix it soon because it's so frustating! Even more when you want to impress your friends!

I had the problem of my apple TV disconnecting from my Netgear wireless system half way through films.  I had to go out of the film, go to settings, disconnect from the network and then reconnect to the network in order to continue watching the film.

I have spent 2 months discussing with both Netgear and Apple support teams.  Eventually I think I solved the problem myself, after doing everything else possible.

My network was set for WPA2-PSK[AES] security.  Even though AppleTV is supposidly compatible with this security, I changed the network security to WPA.  I have not had a problem since doing this change.

If this simple change can help anyone else it will be worth posting it here.
