But usually it is much safer, to delete the photosnot directly after importing, but to check thoroughly if the photos have been imported correctly, and wait untill you have made your backup, before you delete the the photos on the phone. We have seen too many posts by desperate users, who deleted the images directly after importing and only then noticed, that some photos were missing or corrupted - too late.

You don't delete photos using iPhoto on your iPhone. iPhoto only shows you photos in the Photos app.
You can delete photos taken by your phone or copied to it from emails or websites by using the photos app. These photos will be in the Camera Roll and you can delete them there.
Photo albums that were copied to your iPhone by syncing with your computer are removed by doing another sync. When you want to remove photo albums during a sync, deselect the unwanted albums before clicking on Sync or Apply.
