You have to export them from Pages on your Mac to open them with TextEdit. If you use iCloud, upload your documents in Pages for iOS to iCloud and then, on your computer, open Pages, open the document, go to File > Export and export the document as a .txt file

    I presume you only have Text Edit as a document editor on your MAC, If so it opens and edits MS Office .doc files natively and the way to transfer files from your iPad and open them in Text Edit is as follows;

Book mark this in the Safari web browser on your Mac

Log in with your Apple ID

    Click on the iWork icon

    Then the Pages Radio button

All your Pages documents on your iPad should show up,

Mouse over the document you want to download to your Mac

A download button shows up with 3 choices of file types

    Pages ‘09

Choose Word and the document downloads into your downloads folder on your Mac

Once downloaded Open your downloads folder in finder and locate the document right click and Select Open With - Select Text Edit and it will open.

You can also UPLOAD documents to your iPad saved as Word .doc format , by simply dragging and dropping onto the same iCloud Window in your web browser !

This works on Snow leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion and means you do not need the have Pages on your Mac !

Further documents saved in .doc format can be swapped with just about anyone with a PC and running MS Word !

A further and final step on your Mac.

Right click on the .doc Word file

Scroll down to Get Info and click that.

In the window that opens about half way down you will see an Open With diologue

In the pull down window you will see two triangles.

Click on them and choose Text Edit- then click on the change all radio button.

Now every time you click on a .doc format document it will automatically open in Text Edit !

What a godawful to-do just to save a simple document that one would like to see from all computers and devices. I hope this improves! TextEdit serves an entirely different purpose than Pages. For me, anyway. Seriously disappointed in iCloud. Back to Dropbox.

(Except for email, which I love...)
