I know I can't do it through iMovie, but is there a way to record from an IMDB source through the USB port? Evenutally I want to bring it into iMovie for editing, but first I have to get it onto the Mac.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I am totally confused. IMDB is a website that is a database of movies and actors. I don't know how you would import it through USB and use it in an iMovie. Is there a different IMDB that I am not aware of?

HDMI cannot be easily imported. It has copy protection built in.

There are boxes you can buy from Black Magic and others that can take HDMI input. These work only for content that you have created yourself, such as the HDMI port from a camcorder. (But there are much easier ways of importing from a camcorder.)

When they make a DVD and you use that, you are leaving most of the quality on the table. You would be better off if they would give you their raw clips.

    1) If the camera stores to an SDHC card, you can quickly create a Disk Image of the card through Disk Utiltity and import from that.

    2) If the camera shoots DV tape, you need a Firewire port and a Firewire cable, but you get full quality.

    3) It the camera saves to a hard disk, you need a USB cable and to be directly attached, but most will import into iMovie. You could also make a disk image if you were in a hurry.

    4) If the camera stores to a DVD, sometimes those can be stored to a disk image just like SDHC cards, but if they have been converted to a playable DVD, you just import like from any DVD ( and pretty bad quality).

If you need any details let me know.
