TS1538 i want to switch my sim card from phone to iphone, can i stil have a free texting app and not get chrged for it?

a family relative wants to upgrade from his iphone 3G to the iphone 4Gs so when he buys it, he says he'll give me his 3Gs. When he does i want to switch my phones sim card. Once that is done i want to have a free texting app on it, but dont know if data chagres may apply. How can i be sure that wont happen?
