I'm trying to use a Dell monitor from my old PC as a second monitor on my iMac dual core running oSX. I have the MinisiDisplayPort connector to VGA. But when i connect all I get is the color self-test on the Dell and my iMac does not register Dell in the System Preferences> Display. What am i doing (or not doing)?

Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Look at the display orientation on the Preferences pane, I suspect you havne't oriented it. Here are some detailed instructions:

    1. Click the Apple menu, and select System Preferences. The System Preferences box appears.
    2. Choose Displays. A window will appear on each monitor allowing you to choose the resolution for each.
      • On your primary display, you will have options for arranging the displays.
      • To change the primary display, click Arrangement and drag the menu bar from one display to the other. Your menu bar and Dock will move to the other display.
      • If you want the same thing on both displays, select Mirror Displays.2
    3. Close the window to save your changes.

Almost for sure then it's either an adapter or connection issue. Try a different adaptor.
