Q: BUG: Mountain Lion kills wifi speed when using airplay or time capsule

Hi,

Here is the situation, I have a MBP 3,1 Core 2 Duo 2,4Ghz.

I've upgraded from 10.7 to 10.8, and now, when I'm trying to use time machine on my time capsule (last gen), or airplay on my airport express (802.11n) the transmission speed drops from 160/200 to 6/13. (As you can see on the screenshots below. First image, without any of these two features  / Second image, with time machine trying to find the time capsule drive  /  Third image, with airplay activate)

The time machine don't manage to find the time capsule drive and failed.

Airplay works for 3 seconds and stops. I've tryed airplay with itunes (the old way) and quicktime with the new airplay option, both stops after 3/4 seconds..

I made my 30Go time machine backup with an ethernet cable, it worked ok.

I still use my airport express with my iPhone without any problem.

And all other internet usages are working correctly, I can even acces to my data on the time capsule and copy files from with no problem, without this "transmission speed drop" situation.

I have 3 differents wifi signals in my (large) flat:

The time capsule broadcasts 2 different wi-fi n on 2,4ghz and 5ghz

and another Asus router broadcasts wi-fi b/g on 2.4ghz

I've tried the 3 different connections, all have the same "transmission speed drop" issue with airplay and time machine, and these two features don't work anymore.

And of course, I never had this situation with Lion..

Any solution, or is there definitely a bug with mountain lion handling my wi-fi card: AirPort Extreme  (0x168C, 0x87)

I already reseted the PRAM and NVRAM; and did an onyx maintenance nothing changed...

Any help appreciate,

Thx

The second one posted by Gunny Sack worked for me:

Mac OS X 10.7/10.8 Wi-Fi problems and the fix

I’ve packaged both together and uploaded them to my Dropbox. Unzip, then unzip the Kext Utility, then drop the kext on the Utility app. Supply your password, reboot and then hopefully all is well with your Wi-Fi connection. Obviously only have a go if your Mac has Atheros Wi-Fi hardware!

v3.2 Atheros Wi-Fi driver from Snow Leopard, to use on Lion

Did that last night; speeds now back to 300 and no obvious problems so far (I'm running Mountain Lion). Nice work, folks.

Probably advisable to back up your existing IO80211Family.kext first.

I'm having a similar issue with a mid 2012 MacBook Pro (2.9 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.8.2, iTunes 10.4). Whenever I use iTunes to stream music to my speakers, it works well for about two (2) minutes before the entire network stops working. My network is already in G-Only mode due to issues with N. I had no issues with my old 2007 laptop and Snow Leopard or even this one for the one month I had it with Lion.

I don't have an Atheros card, so I can't try the fix described on page 3 of this thread. Anything else I can try?

    Thanks in advance!

I was initially hesitant to use this because I try to avoid too much hacking, but I had all the same conditions described so far - same hardware, same shocking revelation that it was going to take more than a month for an incremental 38GB backup (my first since installing ML). But after downloading it and following your instructions, it was way simple and I'm back to normal operation. Transfer speeds back up to 300 from 6.

BTW, the switching of wifi on and off also worked to trick it back to normal speeds, but it's not a long term solution for me.

    Many thanks.

Anything new with the Wifi issues with airplay and wifi time machine backups? Last word on the forum is from the 11th of Nov. Must be not many people using mid 2007 macbook pros? Anyone try airfoil? or just airtunes via the older airport expresses? I really want to try 10.8 on my mid 2007 macbook pro before i update the late 2011 imac. I was about to update today but then came across this forum and it stopped me dead in my tracks.

I am running OS X.7.5 with no issues - never ran X.6 so have no idea what the issues were from X.6 to X.7. Got the computer with a locked hard drive formatted and installed X.7 and have been happy ever since. I am afraid that apple is doing updates from major revisions way too fast never working out the bugs from one addition to another thus forcing you to update each time. I tend to wait till Dec Jan before doing update as they have a few months to work out bugs. I really hate to sacrifice my Macbook Pro but might have to soon unless X.8.3 comes out soon and fixes the wifi issue. I really want to get a year or two more out of this MBP as it had a new logic board and LCD installed by apple this past winter so the computer in a sense minus the hard drive and optical drive is less than a year old atm.

I will conintue to follow to see if there are any updates. Interested to see if Airfoil is effected or not?

    Yorick,

I did the wifi driver downgrade and my Airplay and Time Machine have been working perfectly ever since. It's an easy process if you follow the instructions listed in the link earlier in this thread. Just be sure to have a full backup of your drive before attempting it (just to be safe).

My wife has a 2008 Unibody 15 that has ML installed and doesn't exhibit the issue. I believe that it only occurs on the MacBook Pro 3.1 2007.  The down grade he provided works nicely for both WiFi and airplay.

@MacMumfordGB - you have described my scenario perfectly - non uni body, 3.1, 17". Initially experienced issues on upgrade to ML, followed instructions to downgrade kext files - now working fine. I did also purchased a USB Wi-Fi dongle that also does the trick.

Seriously? You have a MacBook Pro 3,1 (2007) running 10.8.2 and iTunes 11 fixed this Airplay streaming problem?

Anybody test this? I would be willing to upgrade my mid 2007 macbook pro if this were true. I have never tried to wifi backing it up to my time capsule before not sure if would even - mostly hard wire it as it is much faster as i done in the past even under X10.7. I am only concerned about the airplay as that is one of the functions that i use the most. Most of my software work under 10.7 and 10.8 - only thing i do not know about yet without testing is I am running a HP laserJet 1020 (which was never officially mac compatable) that i got working using the driver for the HP laserJet 1022 - just hopes my $5 yard sale find can last a little longer - so far it works great with X.7.5.

Awaiting X.8.3 before i upgrade my iMac Mid 2011 as there are audio issues with the video card on some machines - X.8.3 is suppose to fix that.

If itunes 11 fixes the issues than that is wonderful news. As for the downgrading the wifi using SL file not sure i can do that as i never used SL went from Leopard to Lion bypasing SL. But if itunes fixes Airplay then I am gonna update this MacBook Pro that had been resurected from the dead by apple last Dec. Or i might wait till X.8.3 comes out this month or next - not sure yet!!!!

How did the dongle work?  Do you disable Airport or does it integrate into that?  Does it hook up at 300 ?
