I got a new imac (late 2012) today. When I switched it on for the first time, i only got a black screen. Is it defect ?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

Hold Power button and turn on your Mac again. If it doesn't show anything, disconnect your iMac from the power source and connect it again

If you just got it, depending on where you bought it from just take it to the store and switch it out for another I would say

When you power on the system do you see a brief grey flash, or is the screen always dark ?

If you don't get the grey flash then either the Gfx chip or display is in a bad state and you should get the system replaced.

You could try to reset the system state by holding down cmd+opt+r+p until after the boot chime. The state will clear and the system restart.
