thanks for your reply.
In my Apple preferences / iCloud, I have either a list of the functions (Mail¬es, contacts, calendars, bookmarks, proto stream, documents&data, back to my Mac and find my Mac) or, to the left-hand side, "accounts details" (which brings to just name and description) and "sign out".
I see nowhere a link to changing the password.
What am I seeing wrong, please?

me again. After looking better, I found to the bottom right a "manage" link, which did lead me to the reset. But that's the window I have been using so far unsuccessfully. Anyway, I did as you suggested, I changed - successfully - my password and again the iCloud mail/synchro rejects the new password (yes, I did update the one in the mail preferences, to the latest one).

Hmm if you've changed your password and go to the icloud preferences, it normally prompts you to input the password. This didn't happen? I would sign out of icloud and sign back in. It'll warn you for some items they'll be removed from your computer, and that's fine. They'll be stored in icloud and return when you sign back in. If you want to make sure they're in icloud before signing out, go to icloud.com and sign in. Poke around there to verify the data is there.
