If you want to use Virgin Mobile in the US, you'll need to buy a new phone designed for their network. They are a CDMA carrier. You can't use an iPhone 3Gs at all on their network as it's strictly a GSM phone.

As KiltedTim mentions, Virgin is just a subsidiary of Sprint, which is a CDMA carrier.  Other than AT&T (who does not allow iPhone's with pre-paid plans) you might look to see if TracFone or T-Mobile suite your needs better - they are both GSM carriers (well TracFone is a mobile virtual network provider, but they do lease network access from T-Mobile and AT&T in certain parts of the country, so you would need to check what they offer in your area).

Of course, no other GSM carrier in the USA other than AT&T can offer you full support for all iPhone features and functions.
