2006 white Intel 24" iMac keeps crashing during boot up!  What can I do?

Hello all,


My local power company had to do some work so they killed the power to my house while my 2006 white Intel 24" iMac was on, along with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, but all was in sleep mode.  When power company was finished, I tried to reboot.  I get the pleasant familiar chime.  The white screen with the spinning circle of ticks and the status bar that starts to fill up and then crash the computer shuts down.  I tried to restart again and again it starts like it is loading up then shutsdown.


Did the power company 'fry' my machine?  It was running OS Leopard 10.5.8 and was working fine yesterday with no hints to trouble.


Any advice on other ways to get this iMac up and running?

    Your HD is over 6 years old, I suspect it may have suffered a fatal crash in which case it will need to be replaced. Before jumping to that conclusion though try some basic tests. First is to restart the computer in Safe Mode, this will reset some caches. One or more of the caches may be corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup gong until a progress bar appears. Once it has fully restarted in Safe Mode try a normal restart and test. If it will not start in Safe Mode I would recommend Apple Hardware Test (AHT) using the original Install Discs that came with your computer. Run AHT in Extended Modeat least 3 times, if it shows any errors then you have confirmed a hardware fault that requires repair. Instructions for AHT are in
