Q: Connect to Server... Error

I am getting a wrong password indicator (shake) when I try to "Connect to Server..." using the username Root and correct password.  The server I am trying to connect to is a Lion Mac Mini.  This worked fine for me up until a week ago.  I had shutdown the lab, including the Mac Mini Server, come back from a week off and now, it won't connect.  I have tried connecting from different computers, no luck.  I have tried reseting the Root password on the server, no luck.  I have tried diableing and re-enabling Root user, no luck.

What protocol?  VNC (screen sharing), AFP (file sharing), SMB (Windows CIFS/SMB file sharing), ssh (remote command line login)?  Other?

Do you have other accounts on the Mac mini?  Have you tried any of those?

For the protocol in question, does the Mac mini System Preferences -> Sharing -> xyz service ->  permissions section allow access?

Have you looked in the /var/log/secure.log ?

    The /var/log/system.log ?

Looking for any related messages at the time the connection attempt was made.

    AFP

Yes, the other account connects fine.

    Yes, access is allowed.

Have not looked at secure.log or system.log, don't know what they are or how to get to them.

You can get to them via Applications -> Utilities -> Console

    system.log has lines like:

server AplleFileServer[710]: received message with invalid client_id 2534

    and late comes out with:

server servermgrd[39641]: PAM: Unable to authenticate.

server emond[97]: Host at 127.0.0.1 will be blocked for at least 15 minutes

    that repeats several times.

in secure.log I can't tell if previous attempts are there, but I tried again after making note of time stamp and nothing is added to it for almost an hour.

If I remember correctly OS X does not normally allow external root access over AFP.

I had been doing this with no issues, until after a week of the server being shutdown.

I would expect difficulties with Root rather than root but this may depend upon the disk format used.

I only have Leopard and Tiger and don't recall ever being able to use AFP with root.
