While searching my computer's Library I find many files with names like  ˛<∞îÊ tøˇ‘êîÚ∏@îÊ –îÊ>.  The files are empty.  Are they normal?  If not why do I get them and how do I prevent getting them and can I just trash them?? (which is what I've been doing)....they worry me

This is on my MacBook 10.5.8

Hi Gordon, are they in your user's Library folder, or Libray at root of the drive?

Are they in another folder in Library?

Could be many things, we should start with this...

    "Try Disk Utility

    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*

    3. Click the First Aid tab.

    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

First, thanks for all the help....even though I'm 74 I've had a MAC for the past 15 years or more.....and are pretty familar with using Disk Utility.....I'll work through all your recomendations

About 3 months ago I went into the root preferences to delete a playlist for some problem or the other and there were probably a 100 of those odd folders, Just this week I had a problem with a kernal crash everytime the computer went to sleep so I was in the root preferences again and there were about 10 of these same weird folders....I deleted them both times....or at least the first time, now the last 10 are in the trash.

I just checked user preferences and there are some there also....totally empty folders I also have a slew of dfx# files....<cfx#TLmeoVm>, etc which I don't remember being there before.

I'll run the repair and see what happens.

Did it all....disk repairs none...only took about 3 mins to complete which seemed strange as I remember longer periods....Permission repairs done....

Odd Folders still in Preference Folder in both root and user...threw them in the trash....if nothing else my sleep crashes have ceased....
