Mmmm, I don't use iTunes Match but still had the problem. Only fixed by turning off crossfade and restarting.

Turning off Crossfade doesn't work for me because it was never on. Tried turning it on and off, no change.

Had the same problem. Turning off cross-fade fixed it (even without restartig iTunes).

    Bizar problem.

    Same problem for me!

Play count doesn't work even after turning off crossfade

Apple should release an update urgently!

"Apple should release an update urgently"

If only it was that simple. I've now spent several hours on the phone with advisors and senior advisors and none of them can get it to work for me. So, it's elevated upwards.

I'm promised an update early next week but I'm assuming that won't be a fix or even an understanding of what's wrong. In my case, there are clearly complex issues here: multiple Apple devices trying to talk to each other through iCloud and with iTunes Match thrown in for good measure.

As the generic issue "Playcount/Last Played" doesn't seem to be an epidemic - this seems to affect a tiny proportion of the Apple user population - then perhaps those affected should contact Apple Care, as I have, and obtain their free of charge advice and assistance.

    Add me to the list.

Last played date and play counts not working from iPad or iPhone and all since i started using iTunes Match. Crossfade has never been on, but turned it on and off and restarted iTunes each time and no difference. This is far from acceptable - was hoping iTunes 11.0 would fix it - haha, now I am going to have to waste hours on the phone to Apple support - getting very fed up. Apple need to fix this - pronto.

I have been using version 11 for a few weeks now and discovered this morning that play counts stopped updating in Itunes.  It would still update from my Ipod classic.  After reading this thread, I realized and I had turned on cross fade this morning.  Turning off cross fade did the trick, and play counts are now updating again as they should.  Odd bug for Apple to let through...

This problem keeps continuing, minor but annoying. each time I turn on itunes more library songs are devoid of their play count. Not a Big deal, but gets Me wondering what else it is effecting. My goodness this is an annoying problem, is beginning to cause a lack of confidence in Apple as a whole and I really have always liked apple. A hard drive recall and a misbehaving major application. The stock has dropped more than a hundred points too. Apple get your act together! please.

I'm basically having the same problem. I never used Crossfade or iTunes Match, and my iTunes has lost hundreds and hundreds of play counts for the songs I have. Only a few have kept their counts, and I don't really comprehend what the problem is. I have an old 80Gb classic iPod that's synced to it, as well as two iPhones, and whatever gets played on either phone isn't updated. Neither of them are even close to capacity for the music, so I don’t have the faintest idea of what's going on. I really hope they fix it soon.

I haven't tried turning off the crossfade, because I want it on!! I also want my play count to tick over and my "last played" column to be active and working. It did before, it should now.

I too have songs that have been played before now showing they've never been played, and songs played on either of my iPods or my iPhone don't have their "plays" added to the "last played" list either.

This REALLY isn't good enough, especially as the "duplicate song" function AND the coverflow album art  has disappeared. I'm yet to be convinced that the pros of 11 outweight the cons.........

Thanks for the fix, this worked great for me!

To all the people out there who haven't bothered reading the thread properly - this applies to playing music in iTunes, not on an iPod, iPhone or iPad.  There's a separate discussion for missing play counts when syncing from an iDevice, this isn't it!

At a guess, when the "Crossfade" option is ticked, the last second of the song isn't played "normally", so it doesn't update the "Last Played" (same as if you skip a song before reaching the end).

Still, poor show Apple - get it fixed!

Wow. Why so critical of others? They're (we're) only looking for help.

The title of this thread "iTunes 11 not updating last playcount and last played" completely defines my problem. If iTunes 11 is not updating of itself, or as a result of not being passed data from elsewhere, or if it's unable to process data it does recieve from elsewhere, does it matter? The end result is the same. The iTunes playcount and recently played data is wrong.

Whether my iPhone is either not passing recently played data, or iTunes Match is not processing the data (if it's in the loop), or iTunes itself - whether version 11 or prior - is not processing the data, the end result is that iTunes 11 is not udating last playcount and last played", and, as far as I know, iTunes is the ONLY place where you can view "play count".

My issue - now passed to a level above Senior Advisor - is being investigated by the iTunes 11 team.

Perhaps you could post a link to the thread you feel others should be participating in?

Play count and last played seems to work if you play a single song, or an album in sequence, but not when you are creating mixed playlists or using shuffel play.    Apple Support recognizes this problem, and expects to correct it in the next (first?) iTunes 11 update.
