I got it in may 2011 (mybirthday), and I only just started thinking about it. I ws in the living room opening my prezzies with my family and when opened this comp for the first time it was pre-infected

So you got it a year and a half ago? As David said, you should have taken it back.
I don't believe it was infected with a virus; I think the previous owner (who returned it to the store) or the store (they used it as a display/demo) installed MacKeeper. it acts like a virus - you should follow previous suggestions and get rid of it immediately. Apple does not pre-install MacKeeper and a Mac wouldn't come "pre-infected" - someone else did and you did not technically get a "new" machine. But that is irrelevant now - any warranty has expired anyway because you waited too long.
