Someone at the Carphone Warehouse in the UK said that iPhones bought through them, even if initially SIM-Free, are locked regionally (only usable with networks in the UK), whereas SIM-Free iPhones bought directly from the Apple UK site are totally unlocked, so I can use it internationally even after using it with a UK network.

However, I assume that this is referring specifically to the phone and not the SIM? If I buy an iPhone 5 directly from Apple and a '3' nano SIM from Carphone Warehouse to apply to the iPhone as its first SIM, will it remain totally unlocked or will regional locking apply? Doesn't seem like there's any info about this on their website or product details.

Thanks for any clarification.

iPhone 5, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

The ONLY source for officially unlocked iPhones, in the UK, is Apple...no where else. The iPhones that Carphone warehouse sells will lock to the first UK carrier's sim inserted in the phone, & can only be activated on a carrier network in the UK.
