Q: System Restore to previous iTunes version caused "New iTunes Library" error

So like others I upgraded to 11; tried to keep an open mind but the thing keeps hanging up on me, running slowly, and wow I hate not being able to see my playlists next to my library. Even little things like deleting a song from a playlist and iTunes not automatically playing the next song bother me to no end.

SO, I decided to try a System Restore to my previous iTunes version but now I can't open iTunes due to a "New iTunes Library" error. /facepalm

I'm assuming it has something to do with 11 changing my Library file format and the file not reverting during the restore? Or something?

Is there anything I can do at this point? Any easy fix I'm not aware of?

Or will I have no choice but to uninstall/re-install the previous iTunes? (If this truly is the only solution could you please point me in the direction of the easiest way to go about it, I'm somewhat computer-literate but I've heard that it can be a pain in the butt)

I'm sure my songs themselves are fine, right? So my main thing is that I REALLY don't want to lose my playlists, I have dozens of them, that's what I'm the most worried about. I do keep all my music/playlists fairly up to date on my iPod as well, if that would help me restore my library. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Just spent 30 minutes reverting from the POS iTunes 11, to the fully-working, and fully-user friendly iTunes 10.7, and this thread has just saved my life! A big Thanks to "Manny 888" for their hard-work. You should be working for Apple!

I don't understad why iTunes doesn't do any survey or something before messing around with the whole functionality of the player!!! It totally got on my nerves! Unbearable to manage and 0 functionality.

Alright, I know I'm jumping into this conversation a little late, but if you could help me I'd totally appreciate it. I also had the "New iTunes Library" issue, so I took your advice and simply hit "repair" for iTunes under the "uninstall" menu. I let my computer do its thing, but now when I try to open iTunes, a box comes up telling me "the file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." So what have I done wrong or what do I need to do to continue? My music isn't all listed under a file called "iTunes music" in my documents because I don't buy all my music on iTunes. So I have multiple different folders for all my artists and songs under My Music. Have I lost all my music? SOS, advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Microsoft Windows Windows Vista and Windows 7
      \Users\username\Music\iTunes\
    2. Drag the iTunes Library file from the above location to the Desktop.
    3. Open the Previous iTunes Libraries folder in the iTunes folder.
    4. Locate the file named iTunes Library YYYY-MM-DD where YYYY-MM-DD is the date you upgraded iTunes (Year-Month-Day).
    5. Drag this file to the iTunes folder (the enclosing folder).
    6. Rename this file to iTunes Library.
    7. Open iTunes.

These are the steps form the first post, the ones who I followed and helped me.

These are very detailed steps, except that I don't have any previous library folder because it is a fresh install of win7 64bit.  Any Ideas on how to fix this?

I had this problem too where I couldn't even open itunes because it told me it was corrupt. I did a system restore and still couldn't open it. I took someone's advice on here and repaired it from the control panel, and it opened but it kept crashing. After that, I right clicked the itunes icon and chose 'Restore previous versions' and chose an older date, and it's perfect now.
