Q: Greyed-out songs problem

First off, I'd like to start by saying that I'm sorry if I there are other threads that already talked about this. I tried googling for solutions, but I could not find any one article that could help my current problem.

After downloading my songs onto my iTunes, I tried to sync the songs to my iPhone. That's when the "Greyed-out" songs started showing up. In the Library itself, the songs are normal, playable. But under "Devices" -> Music, the songs appear "greyed-out" with a circle being created with two arrows that do not move. Furtherrmore, the "grey-out" song(s) does not sync to my iPhone. Below is a picture of the problem.

Greyout1.jpg

Again, the song is plays perfectly fine in the Library. However, it will not play under the Devices -> Music category nor will it appear on my iPhone. Please help me. I am tired of this problem and would like a quick solution. If there was a thread with the exact same problem, please post the link to said thread IF there is a solution. It is much appreciated.

I already tried one of the solutions that worked one time but doesn't seem to work now. The solution involved logging out of one's Apple account then logging back in. As I said, this one doesn't seem to work for me anymore. Any help and input is appreciated. Thanks.

hi there, I actually had this problem a while ago, i guess if technical representatives from apple cant help us, let's utilized things we know, I have an ipad 2 and downloaded songs from my itunes in my office computer, then right now, I tried to copy some songs from my home desktop and eventually noticed that after the process of copying files, i had this greyed-out music in my ipad, i was like freaking out and searched for solutions for it, then i googled my problem and possible solutions but i was disappointed cause i dont get any help...

the first thing i did was to open up my itunes at home

then, try to locate those songs which is greyed out

after locating it, i deleted those songs from my music one by one,  on my device using my desktop so i actually delete it manually using itunes

2nd i tried to delete playlist that i made which i found out not so useful at all..( its my opinion only)

3rd i had to arranged my songs in my ipad by artist

    then Wallah....my problems solved

It's actually corrupted files that i copied from my desktop to my itunes

and its better to use one itunes for specific device

    thats all

    hope this will help others...

    ciao....

Hi I am sorry if this reply is so late, however I to am having this exact problem and every website I have looked on has no help what so ever. I dont think anyone really has the answer as apple seem to be stuggling with this problem to so I am hopeing maybe there will be a small update for the iphones / ipods ect and itunes to fix this issues. If not I will be making an hour and a halfs worth of journey to speak to an assistant in the apple store as all I have had from having my iphone is trouble and I really did expect more and to be quite frank would not recomend it to anyone at this moment in time.

However I do wonder if you could help me with another of my querys...

I do not seem to be able to drag and drop music from my itunes libary to my music (the section under device) do ou have any suggestions?

Thankyou from another confused itunes/iphone user.

I've literally tried about every single one of these suggestions and nothing has worked. I have a mac and when I try to delete the greyed out songs from the music tab under my device, they don't delete. Also, I tried restoring my ipod on the phone with a customer service man from apple. No dice. I tried re-downloading the songs, didn't work. I can't figure it out if anybody has any suggestions to help me out, they would be much appreciated. Thank You!

    Another possible solution.

I had the same problem, no music, no books, no apps - basically a pretty useless iPad. Tried all the suggestions on the community - restore, change iPad name, synced and resynced.

Just now I've re installed iTunes (10.7) on my MBA and now resynced and my iPad is back up and running.

Given the number of posts on this on several streams it is very surprising that Apple have not done anything yet, has Apple lost it's way on the user experience ?

I was considering a new 7" iPad just for music and books but  this has made me rethink - Android and Kindle might be a better option.

I had same problem and took half a day to figure it out... I tried everything i could think or read here and nothing worked. So i decide to restore my iPhone 4S and configure it as a new one. But before, i did some copy/paste of my photos/video folders from Windows Explorer then i've select all then tried to delete it from windows explorer..after few deleted i got a message saying that the device wasnt responding or was unpluged. But wasnt.

some files was not deletable. And in my iPhone the pictures wasnt there too but files was listed in windows explorer....

So, i did a Photos sync but choosing the Windows Sample folder only. It wiped out all my photos folder and did new one, then all my songs were synced again and all is back and playable.

I suggest, look if you have photos, videos, apps that isnt working or not deletable.. then wipe it out by an iTunes sync (unselecting sync those things or sync completely different apps or folder)

It worked for me... Hope you get it fixed too.

I had this problem on my iPod 4 (most recent iOS) and creating AAC versions solved everything. I selected my entire iTunes library and right clicked to see the option "Create AAC Version" and then deleted the original songs (time consuming but worth it) and I haven't had any problems since.

I didn't have this problem or any problems until iOS 6.  I couldn't get the friggin' thing to quit shuffling, so I rebooted the whole thing and restored from my last i-Tunes back-up.  But when I added music, then I got the greyed out songs.  I tried a couple of other suggestions, but this is the one that worked and it was a very simple fix.  I thought I would have to do the ACC thing on every greyed out song, but only needed to do it to one and all the rest got fixed too!  Thank you very much.

I bought an iPhone 5 and could not add music to it. Same problem: grey songs. After hours searching forums and blogs I found this solution. Work for me! Now I manually add songs using iTunes and no problem. Hope it helps.

    1. Download and install iExplorer http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/

    2. Plug in device first, then open iExplorer

    3. Delete the iPhone\Media\iTunes_Control folder (you may want to copy this, just in case)

    4. Restart the iPhone / iPad

    5. Start iTunes. Not restore iPhone from back up, select New iPhone (don't worry, you will not lost apps or data on your iPhone doing this)

    6. Add music manually with iTunes

    Hey everyone!

Just had the "greyed-out" problem with a song I tried to add to my iphone from my itunes. However, I just solved it and got it to work. Here's what I did:

    1) Unplugged/Ejected my iphone (after all other syncing, backing up, etc was done)

    2) Plugged my iphone back up and ensured it came up in itunes

    3) On my iphone, opened "Music" app and went to songs

    4) Dragged the song I was having trouble from itunes to one of my playlist listed on my iphone...

    5) ...and then BOOM! The songs started to appear on my iphone and started to sync and load!

I figured the "greying" of the song meant it was still syncing. So, by opening my music app on my iphone while still having it plugged in I was able to see the songs time-frame for loading up (meaning how long it was going to take)

    Hope this helps

Thx DySco, It was totally the auto-sync. For me it started when I tried to import songs I had generated (original material) on Garageband. It caused itunes to freeze up and lag. But now it all seems to work after getting rid of auto-sync. Crazy effing computers. Thx agin man.

Someone said something similar already, but i had this happen and couldnt fix it, so i made sure all my music and contacts and such were on my itunes, then i restored my 4s to original settings. Then when i plugged it in and re synced, all my grayed out songs were now back to normal and it only took about an hour to do with 8gb of data on my iphone.

This is what worked for me.

1 - Uncheck the check mark next to the song's name.

    2 - Sync your iphone.

3 - Check the check mark.

4 - Sync your iphone one more time.

My iphone was paired to sync wirelessly, so I ejected and phisically plugged it before doing this.

Not sure if this had any effect, but I think is worth mentioning.

i know exactly what to do! ok this is what i did too jsut a couple seconds ago messing around. so i copied the greyed songs into a playlist, by doing this then you can procceed. alright so after they are in the palylist then you delete one of the songs in the playlist only not the iphone music tab, and the phone should update and add your songs. its wierd but i think the for some reason the iphone doesnt update your songs when you just drag them over. I hope this helps!
