It depends on your definition of "rip off". "Rip off" implies theft or deceit.

AppleCare is not a deceitful marketing effort but I doubt the company loses money on the product.

Nearly all Apple hardware products have a one year warranty (in the US). If you desire more you have to pay for it. This is your decision.

FWIW I have never purchased AppleCare for any Apple product I have ever owned in the 27 years of owning them. None of them has ever required service. The money I did not spend on AppleCare could buy a fully configured Mac Pro or a couple of very nice iMacs today. This is called "self-insurance". I don't lose money either.

It is insurance. You may need it or you may not.

I have it on all of mine (iMac, MBP, iPad). I wouldn't do without it.

Just very recently, I had problems with my 2010 iMac. First they replaced the hard drive; two weeks later (problems persisted), they replaced the logic board (repair cost about $800+). Both repairs done in my home free of charge. In the US, Applecare includes on site service for desktops as long as you live within 50 miles of an authorized service provider. To me, that is priceless - I don't have to lug my heavy 27" iMac into a store.

You do not have to buy it at an Apple store; I generally purchase it from a reputable online reseller such as Amazon, Provantage, or LAcomputercompany who sell the package for less:

You can buy it on eBay too, for a substantial discount. As far as I have been able to tell this is legitimate.

The seller must actually ship the retail box though; this is change from earlier policy.

Mine paid off this year (or: this has not been the my year with troublefree Apple products):

    iMac repairs (above)

2009 Macbook replaced with a new 2012 MBP 2 weeks short of being 3 years old (and expiration of Applecare)

    iPad replaced twice

I've had a total of 3 logic boards replaced over the past 5 years - at approx. $800 - 900 a shot, it's considerably more than paying $140 x 3 for the Applecare.

Yes, I know - I'm glad they finally stopped allowing the emailing  of the fake/previously used registration keys; I reported enough of them.

i have a full year to decide whether getting apple care is a good idea or not for me its just ive already spent a tonne of money on my very first Apple computer which is a custom built 15" macbook pro retina and then they say oh but if you want to insure it for 3 years itll cost €349 it felt like a slap on the wrists and if i dont get the apple care they told me in the shop that a phonecall to support will cost €49. That sounds very much like someone is ripping me off somewhere.

Perhaps if i were to get Apple Care i could get it from a website like you stated but im not sure how thatd work for me seeing as its based in America and not Europe more importantly here in Ireland where im from and live. I'll keep looking into it though, thanks for your replys.

    Then don't buy it.

There is no shortage of forces requiring you to spend money you do not wish to spend. This is not one of them.

You have the freedom of choice in this matter. Stop complaining and use it.

Your regular warranty (have you read it????) states that you have 90 days telephone support (that means any question at all) and 1 year of hardware coverage (that means free repairs on hardware - not software problems). If you call after 90 days and it is a software problem, then yes, it will cost you. That is not a rip off - the terms are in the warranty. If you want to be covered 100%, get the Applecare. It is really of benefit to read the warranty.

Frankly, I do not know since I am in the US (but I would assume yes you can) - why don't you check with your Apple store?
