Hi All,

I wonder if anyone can help as I keep having issues with my Mac Pro crashing more and more frequently.

Its an early 2008 model 2 x 2.8ghz, 10gb ram, Nvidia 8800 GT512 card.  Im on mountain lion which is up to date.

I'm a photographer and whenever im creating a batch of previews in lightroom for instance it wont get all the way through without crashing and rebooting.  I thought at first it was getting to hot but after using SMC to run the fans at max during the preview creation, it now still crashes.

Below is a copy of the error report, which to be fair at the moment doesnt mean a lot to me, im hoping that some of you more advanced users can decipher it a little?

Many thanks in the first instance.

Dave

Your report is a Machine check. Those tend to be hardware or firmware problems.

Many Machine check problems are Error Correcting Code (ECC) uncorrectable memory errors. This one does not have the classic look of an uncorrectable memory error.

Your situation is made MUCH more difficult to diagnose because you have kernel extensions added that make changes deep inside the kernel:

    com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic          7.0 15106.786747

    com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge          7.0 15106.786747

    com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook          7.0 15106.786747

    at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch          3894

Thes extensions may be causing or contributing to this problem. Or maybe not, but Apple will not take you seriously unless/until you have the panic with non-Apple extensions removed (i.e., in an All-Apple kernel rather than a modified kernel).

Keep an eye on your memory using Apple System Profiler > Memory. Any modules reporting as less than the expected size, or showing a status other than "OK" are seeing errors.

    'No trouble found'

That doesn't mean the hardware is definitely OK. It just means that if you have a hardware fault, the AHT failed to detect it (as it often does.)

These kernel panics happened on the same processors ( 2 and 3) that had the panics before. But it does not appear to be a software problem because you are running wildly different software.

These could be memory problems, and it would be prudent to try running an all-night memory test such as Memtest. Is all your memory listed? 2+2+2+2+1+1+(two slots empty)??

My fear is that these could also be processor or cache problems.

A helpful technique from classical computer science is called the "half-interval search".

Examine half ot the items under study. If they show no problems, the problem is likley in the other group. Repeat, cutting in half again, until you find the trouble.
