Yes, of course. The master volume is not the problem.
I can hear my initial text tone (sonar) perfectly fine. But once I'm in a conversation with someone via text or iMessage, any subsequent messages that come in while I have the screen open on this converstaion have little or no alert sound. If I close the text program then the sonar dings again at normal volume as it should. This is a problem when I'm engaged in an ongoing conversation with the text app open.

Did you tried to turn volume up with side buttons while you have open the message app?
Didn't work? Try a reset.
Reset= Press and hold Power and Home button until Apple logo appears. Release and wait to reboot.

Yep. Done all this. I've actually been trying to sort this issue out for several months, and periodically do google searches for solutions from others with this problem (there are many). I've rebooted, messed with volumes, including the music app volume, etc, making sure it's turned up.
Just this moment I had my friend text me as a test. i left the text conversation open. In fact, I did hear the little swoosh sound when she replied, but it was really quiet (much quieter than it had ever been with older IOS versions), and I've got all my volumes maxed. There's no way I'd hear that reply if I were more than 5 feet away from my phone.
So, I guess my problem is more that I simply need to turn this alert up, and can't seem to find a way to do so.
