System requirements for OS X 10.7 Lion
If you are happy with Snow Leopard, stay with it.
You may have to take the Macbook to the Apple store to have it checked out.

I have the white version of your Macbook. If you upgrade your RAM to 2GBs, you can run Lion... which I am doing... BUT it just isn't quite the same. The system seems a bit more laggy and quirky.
If there is a particular app you need that requires it, I'd say do it, you probably won't pull your hair out over it. Otherwise, like Dominic23, suggests, I'd stay with Snow Leopard. There really are few compelling elements to upgrade to Lion just to have the latest available OS for your hardware.

I'm not exactly sure what the clucking sound may indicate... possibly an issue with the fan barings? It may be unrelated to your wake on sleep issue. Does your macbook wake up from sleep mode when its not making the sound?
Regarding the fan, if you have access to an Apple Store, I'd schedule an appointment with a Genius to at least look at it (free of charge) to get an idea of what you're hearing. Replacing a fan isn't all that difficult and there are even videos online detailing the procedure and a fan can be purchased for under $12 online.
I've had several issues with waking from sleep mode over the years and it's always turned out to be a software issue... so far Sometimes something as easy as running clean up routines using free maintenance utilities like Onyx solves it. Other times it may be recently installed software. Had an issue with my antivirus (it's a personal choice!) causing it to hang at some point either going into, during, or out of sleep mode. Did you install any new software just before noticing a problem with Sleep Mode?

Oh about the fan thing i will make an appointment.
But, I've noticed that MacCleaner is the cause of the sleep problem. After uninstalled MacCleaner, it seems pretty well with the sleep prob.
