In my MacPro 1.1  I'm suffering from programmes not appearing (Toast, Utilities) and they are in Force Quit, but in red and don't quit so only a restart temporarily solves the issue.   Also, when the desktop open disc drawer command is operated, it blues and the drop down menu doesn't appear as well as it fails to open the disc drawer,   Restart  again!   My second HD is not seen in Sys Prefs but is on the desktop and in Utilities and I can oppen it.

I've unsucessfully tried Disk Warrior latest edition, and all the applications in Utilities.   Repair, Permssions and Verify proved unsucessful.    I've disconnected the power competely and left for a while before turning back on again, also tried to reset PRAM but the MacPro simply starts up again in the normal fashion without any sound of PRAM  being indicated.   Short of emptying the HD and starting all over, I can't think of anything else to try so if anyone has an answer to this staste of affairs I eagerly welcome an input!

I should've added that I have active Sophos but still used it to check for a virus etc., and it determines all clear.   Also on some occasions after selecting Sleep I have later found that the MacPro had turned itself back on again.   (I didn't have time here to use Edit . . . ! )

Whs the Disk Repair OK in DW? Did the Permission /repair complete or not, was it just the same errors reported a second time on Permissions the worries you?

I would suggest uninstalling Sophos and seeing if your problems go away.

Answering both of  you . . . with thanks.

All checks were shown as repaired and verfied OK.    Disk Warrior showed a few minor mprovements and afterwards, a clear graph on each prog.   If I"d found  something other than usual I would've accordingly commented.

I will check on uninstalling  Sophos altough how that could make a difference I'm puzzled on!

It has been my experience when asked to help someone with problems on their Mac to first uninstall any AV or security software then check the system out after that. It is amazing how many problems just seem to go away when you do that.

Uninstalled Sophos.    Problem seems almost solved but strangely, I now have Appllications in the Trash which won't trash away . . . !   This Appllicatins contains Utillties - System - Boot efi - BootX - Core Services - Boot efi  -  BootX.   I've no idea when it arrived there so it could have been there for quite some time or just appeared folloiwng my recent actions.  Nevertheless, at the moment I can open the Disc Drawer, raise Toast and iDVD which had also been part of the failures, but I've yet to find what happens with the turning back on again after choosing sleep wich was a spasmodic event.

BootX is part of your system. It is what prepares the Mac to boot. You don't want to delete it.

Sophos appears to have really been screwing with your system.

A reinstall might be in order.

I'm aware BootX is part of the basic system, Alan.   Obviously at some time in the future I'll need to totally re-install which is what I'm having to avoid at  the moment because I'm heavily engaged with video editing and will be for a long time.

Thanks for the helpful words - and at least I'm rid of the irksome stuff - worth a Solved star!

Glad I could help. You are welcome. Thanks for the star.

Sounds like a good plan to wait until you have an opening between projects.
