    HARD RESET worked for me.

I have been having this problem for weeks, decided to google search "iphone 5 poor wifi signal" and it lead me to this discussion.  I held down home button and top button until phone turned off, then released and pushed the top button to turn the phone back on.  Be careful doing this as if you were to push both buttons until the phone went off, then released the top button and held the home button, you could eneter DFU mode which may require you to plug into iTunes for a good old RESTORE.  Don't do that, just hold both to turn off and then release all buttons..  Then push the button on top to turn back on.

Don't connect your iphone to the computer while performing this operation...  You never know what iTunes will decide to do...

I tried reset network settings a dozen times, no luck. I also restored the phone from new (had to do that anyway to fix bad battery issues). Tried HARD RESET too - didn't fix anything.

My iPhone 5 cannot even see WiFi networks that my other devices connect to at full bars. I am able to connect standing right next to a router. I move away a few meters and it's dead again. To me that looks exactly like a non-working antenna. That is if you disconnect the antenna from a WiFi device this is exactly what would happen. It would connect using the antenna connector as long as you're very close, but would have no range.

Returning it today. Too bad because everything else seems to work.

I had this problem too. I turned off the phone the normal way and then turned it on. The wifi signal is back to full strength. People might want to try this too before doing the reset - its easier and safer.

I was able to get signal strength back after disabling Bluetooth first and then doing a hard boot. After the hard boot if I enable Bluetooth the signal issue reoccurs. So it seems to be some conflict between Bluetooth and wifi. I don't use Bluetooth so I will just keep it disabled to keep a strong wifi signal.

After using my iPhone 5 for about a month, I observed suddenly same WiFi signal strength issue at home:

    - WiFi signal strength indicator shows only one bar

    - WiFi signal strength indicator of same network in "Settings" shows full four bars

    - did not observe any disconnections or WiFi speed degradation (reached 30 Mbps as usual)

Switching WiF on and off as well as changing the network (I have two networks 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz) did not help.

iPhone 5 HARD RESET restored correct behavior of WiFi signal strength indicator to standard 4 bars value.

I had the same problem. One bar on the wifi wave symbol, however, my signal was still strong. (pages were loading up fast) I performed a "hard-reset" and that fixed the problem. Same signal strength but now bars are full.

Note: This is my second Iphone 5, I had to exchange mine after a lens problem.  I didn't experience this problem with the first iPhone. My guess is that some of the phones have a glitch, some don't.

I had same problem and did the hard reboot by holding home button and top button then turned back on.  I had 3 bars automatically. Hope this helps

I'm on my second iPhone 5 and this one has had the "low signal" indicator  issue on and off for some time. Restarting the phone does work, but only temporarily. I don't think the indicator provides an accurate read on actual signal strength. I noticed that the low signal returned yesterday at home, and I was sitting maybe 15 feet from my router. I just joined my wifi network here at the office and downloaded a 50MB podcast in no time, all while having the low signal indicator displayed.

Okay...since my last post on the 10th, I've had the low signal indicator on my phone. I've not restarted my phone since. Going to Settings > Wi-Fi gives different results than what you might see on the top of the display. Right now I'm looking at my office network in Settings > Wi-Fi and I am getting a full signal. While at home last night, I walked to the opposite side of the house from where my wifi router is. Under Settings, I had a weaker signal, but not the non-existent signal the indicator at the top would have you believe. I walked from there to right in front of the router and watched the signal strength (in Settings) improve.

Same problem here.  Signal shows full strength.  When I am next to the router it works fine. When I take 5 steps away from it signal strength remains the same but cannot load any web pages, Spotify does not work and so on.  Have tried all the fixes here and even purchased a new router ( which I will be returning ) and nothing has worked. This is awful and I cannot believe they would release the phone with such a glaring flaw.
