HI all. I just got my iPhone 3G out of the drawer to use as a travel/backup phone.

I did a clean install and set it up as a new phone a few months ago.

I didnt have a full backup of it from before that (long story, it was a corrupted backup anyway and it was lost when my mac went bang in u/g to Lion!) But I assumed all would be ok as Id just set up as a new phone and reinstall all my apps.

How WRONG!

I just discovered that the vast majority of my wonderful paid for apps will not load onto the 3G because most have been upgraded for the later iOS's and no longer compatible.

Thats all well and good. But Apple apparently havent given us a way of keeping all the apps seperate for each phone, So now I no longer have use of the probably THOUSANDS of pounds worth of apps Ive purchased (429 at last count!). Beyond a backup (which are fraught at best) - surely there must be a better solution to this for people with multiple phones.

Its not like an old computer where youusually have the software on discs etc and you can always reinstall the software somehow. In this case the system has actively cut off my ability to keep the phone viable. Im totally gutted and gobsmacked.

Any ideas as to how I can get back my favourite apps which were comaptible with 4.2.1? Or Im just stuck with a handful of duff ones that have never been updated since day one anyway? While all the decent apps have updated beyond 4.2.1 and lost?

iPhone 3G, iOS 4.2, 4.2.1

No. Most newer apps will not run on 4.2.1. The 3G was discontinued 2.5 years ago. If you didn't save copies of the old versions of the apps, then I'm afraid you're out of luck.

The apps are stored in /Users/You/Music/Mobile Applications/

and if you have someones ios 4.2.1 compatibles please let me know. In my case, itunes update them automatically with versions non compatibles with ios 4.2.1. Then i erase the good versions from my iphone without notice the itunes update.

Now we know apple products are only for 3 years?

    Thanks Apple
