When you open the workflow in Automator the selection goes back to the default but the saved service when run will have the value you set in the pulldown.
One other thing are these images in iPhoto already and you are just putting them into an album or are they new images your are putting into iPhoto? If they are new you should use Import Files into iPhoto action.

Thanks very much, Frank. That's a start for sure. Certainly appreciate the pointer to the correct action, in your second paragraph.
But re the first bit ... Are you saying this is actually the way it's meant to work? If so, then I need some more info to un-befuddle my mind ... This is a service, as distinct from a workflow, so its not something one would run by opening it within Automator. The way I believe its supposed to work (or so I thought, at least) is that one selects a file (in this case a .jpg or similar) in Finder or another app, right/ctrl-click, and select the 'service' in the context menu. So there'd be no oppoprtunity in that operation to select an album from the dropdown. I've created several 'services' before, and that’s certainly been the way they’ve all worked.
Am I still missing something?

Guess I didn't explain myself very well.
When the workflow is run as a service the album name will be the name that you set.
However if you open the workflow in Automator again the album name will appear as the default entry. If you were to say it at this point the album name would be saved as whatever it is set to.
So does that clear it up or did I make it even muddier?

Ah, that makes it a little clearer, thanks. But I'd better just clarify your 3rd paragraph, 2nd sentence. Are you implying that if I've re-opened the workflow in Automator, I'd need to again select my preferred album before re-saving (and that if I re-saved without doing that, I'd have inadvertently set it to the default)?

Yes if you open the service in Automator AND re-save it you need to make sure you set the album name again.
