As Niel said, you need to connect your iPhone to your computer and upgrade through iTunes. See:
Though it refers to upgrading from iOS 4, the procedure will be the same.

The best way to update your 3G is to do like me I will be going to a new Samsung phone just because of things like this. You buy the Iphone and love it but now most of my apps will not work and need to be updated but you need a newer OS that you cant get. THAT *****!!!

I'd suggest you research how quickly new Android versions cut off older phones before you make the jump. The cutoff is in many cases happens sooner, in some cases a lot sooner, than with iOS devices.
